Has anyone used this, or know anyone who has. I was talking to Len at Core sound today, nice guy by the way, about the two. He says that the Duo is better, vs the moded UA-5? any thought's?

does Len/ Core Sound SELL the Oade mod UA-5?
no?
hmmm, i think there's your answer. ;)

Yep, Len IS a good guy, but... ;) ;)

isn't that thing a bitch to power in the field? I think I saw some guy that had one and he said he had to use 9volt power? Is this true?
-
Now see, 3 simple posts later, and my mind is made up. ;D

never heard a good tape made with the duo...heard lots of good tapes with Doug's modded UA-5...everyone I have ever heard who got the duo from corecsound had nothing but problems...heard only successes with the UA5....leave this one up to you... :)

I would also lean towards the UA5, way more feedback out there on it, seems more widely used.
-
I'm pricing out the UA-5 as we speak. I think it would be easier/cheaper to buy it "stock", then send it off to Doug to get the mod. Thanx guys!
Peace, Jess

FWIW, I think Doug only mods UA-5s bought direct from the Oade Bros. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the case.
-
and if I was to get the UA-5, I would absolutely get the Oade Warm Mod....There is a Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds tape made by Andrew Gresko floating around that definitely shows what this mod adds!

ya i'm pretty sure brian is right, doug only mods the ones he sells. here's the prices doug gave me incase anybody is thinking about getting one...i know i am ;) :
Stock UA-5 $275
w/Digi-Out Mod $350
w/Warm Mod $500
w/Presence Mod $550
doug also described the diff. in the presence and warm mod.:
"The easiest way to describe it is that the warm mod sounds more like tube gear, while the presence mod is more like transistor gear. If you like really bright sounding recordings then the presence mod may be preferable. If you like a BIG sound with plenty of low end character then the warm mod may be better."
from everything i've heard the warm mod is the way to go. as soon as i get a little more cash i'm gonna buy a warm mod. ua-5 and see how it stands up to my mp-2.
peace,
Justin

Yes, confirmed, Oade will only sell the moded from them. I can't buy and send. Looks like I'm gettin' the warm moded !! WOOOHOOO

I have a wmod UA5, I'm really loving this thing. I pulled an absolutely SWEET tape at Scofield last night. Blows my mind...
Only bummer, and it's a biggie if you want to do 24/96: the Oade mod kills the laptop > USB > UA5 capability, so you can't playback your 24 bit recordings with the modded UA5.
I'm scratching up the $$ now to buy ANOTHER UA5 (unmodded) for that reason.
