This is the first new portable product after the spin off from D&M Professional, so this is an entirely new sales channel. Their marketing is different that's for sure.

I just had Doug Oade mod my 661..... and this comes out?  Jeez.   :-[

I agree with everyone else.  I find it strange they would getting into dealers hands without a formal PR announcement.

That said, it appears they chopped off a whole 1.5 inches in length.  Even if everything under the hood remains the same, a smaller footprint is always applauded in my household.

If turns out to be good quality, agree on the 1.5 inches, I can just barely fit the 661 in a lower cargo pocket and with the PFA with the extended barrels isn't all that stealthy, only suitable for old folk security shows. But I have two Doug wmod 661s and no inclination to kick down for a 561 I'll just go nbox>m10 when necessary.

It looks like you can set your files to mono. That's nice. I sure wish we knew the 4 channel specifics though.

Couple of these on buy-it-now at eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Marantz-Professional-PMD-561-Handheld-4-Channel-Solid-State-Recorder-/262520979180?hash=item3d1f783eec:g:6yMAAOSwyKxXhQOA

Estimated delivery July 27-Aug 9??????

Still no more info on its capabilities.  I assume the two stereo meters (one on the menu) means it does 4 track, but does it take 4 external analog inputs or only two with the internal mics or digital in, and does it do 24/96 in 4 track mode??

661 also has two meter bars, so may or may not mean 4 channels.

For just under 400 bucks I am tempted to try it, but if it can't take a warm mod or a concert mod, then it really doesn't replace anything I'm using now.
once again, lost in all the noise

With shipping, it's only $331 from Touchboards, but that is probably a pre-order as another site (Dale Pro Audio?) indicates it won't be released until September.  If Touchboards is a reliable seller, that is a pretty smoking deal as it seems pretty comparable to the 611.  Only real question seems to be if it has 4 discrete audio channels and if the input for the other two channels is through a single RCA (SPDIF) rather than the dual RCA inputs of the 661.  If it could do 4 channels via XLR x2 and RCA x2 that would be pretty great.  And of course, battery life is a big question mark especially when going 4 channels.

Some more details here and on the links from that page. It still says four channels, but there are no details, that I could see, describing that.

Also, a potentially useful phantom box on the product sheet...

Looks pretty big and since it has foot pads is probably designed for shelf use which means it likely runs on AC

It's an AC unit per the specs here - definitely not an easy option for DLSR
