Where else can I get a 1/4" to 5/8" adapter?
« on: April 16, 2008, 10:14:11 PM »
I've recently purchased on of these handy-dandy mini mic mounts on the yard sale
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-GNA-3

and I've now realized that I'm going to need an adapter to make my lighting stand work with it.  Sound Pros has got the adapter, but it's $8 (which is reasonable) but then another $6.50 or more shipping.

any other online sources for this type of item that might possibly have a cheaper shipping option?  Or does anyone have one that they don't need and/or want that they could throw in a small bubble mailer and stick a couple stamps on?

I got all of my adapters and clamps and shit from B&H photo.  Good prices and fast shipping.

That knob looks like a set screw for tightening that 1/4 inch top stud to the unthreaded 5/8 stud some light stands come with.

If your stand has 1/4 threads at the top, you will need something like the following to mount to the stand
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546493-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_088_088_Female_1_4_20_to.html
then something like the following to adapt the 3/8 to 5/8
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/284333-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_MIBA_Female_3_8_to_5_8_.html

If you look closely at the adapter in the SP-TMA-1 link you posted earlier you'll see that it's actually two adapters sold as one unit, a 1/4>3/8 already screwed into a 3/8>5/8.

Look around the 4 pages of adapters there at B&H as there are brands other than Bogen/Manfrotto which are the same adapters that sell for less. What you actually need depends on what is on the top of your stand.

also it' s worth going to your local music stores, guitar center, sam ash ect.  I tried to go to Guitar Center just for this purpose and ended up @ Sam Ash and talked to a guy behind the counter, and they didn't have anyting specifically packaged, but he we walked around mic stands looking for one and eventually he just unscrewed an adapter out of a boxed mic and handed it to me.  Nice Guy

Never hurts to check these two vendors.
http://www.micsupply.com/standaccessories.htm $10
http://www.wesdooley.com/aea/Modular_Microphone_Stands.html $8.50
It has been awhile, but the Wes Dooley site only charged $4 for USPS Priority when I bought a few lock rings. Priority rates have gone up since then, though, but ordering by phone was painless and quick.
