Title: 722 Battery Voltage
Post by: hoyt on February 28, 2006, 06:46:11 PM
So, I've been slightly concernced since day 1 with this sucker that the batteries don't charge right.  Might just be paranoia, but maybe you guys can confirm that :)

When you charge the big battery (7.4v 6000 mah), then switch to battery, what does the little voltage display show?  Should it show 8.2v?  Sometimes I get a steady orange light really quickly after I plug in the unit, I unplug it to read the voltage and I get like 7.9 v.  They I plug it back in, the light blinks for another half hour or so, and then it hits 8.2.  With the small stock battery, I get the same thing, it's like it almost stops charging the batteries at 90% until I unplug and plug it back in.  This one shows 7.7 after the unplug, plug routine...

Thanks!

I've seen that too.  I'm pretty certain the battery charges fully.  If you start recording in that situation, you'll probably see the meter climb up a couple tenths before it starts dropping.  I can't complain - it's a hell of a lot more accurate than my iPod battery meter at least.

I get the same thing, when mostly drained I think the charger shuts off after a few hours and leaves it ~80% then i re-plug it in and it goes for a little while longer to get to ~8V.  When runing it seems to live @ 7.6-7.4V for about 60% of the runtime.  My dummy cell pack likes to live @ 8V and shows a steady more predictable voltage decrease, albeit over a 14hr period.

Well I guess until I buy a rapid charger, I'll just keep plugging, unplugging and checking, to charge these suckers.  It still beats the hell out of carrying an ecocharge and AA's as backups everywhere :)

Hoyt, have you checked with Sound devices support? They are really goood and will address this problem for you. At the least thhey should know it is happening for you so they can address it in a firmware revision.

I have a 744T that works fine!
