Title: Dual XLR > 1/8" mini plug?
Post by: jagraham on May 04, 2014, 08:29:59 AM
Anyone use this setup? I have recently been running my Naks and Teacs to two separate XLRs with a stereo L/R > 1/8" mini. I'm needing a new set in order to run both sets of mics at once. Looking for something with fewer parts to keep track of and wondering what others use for this.

In particular, has anyone used the following? Looks like it is for hooking up your mp3 player to a system with XLR inputs, but I see no reason it would not work for mics > recorder.

It'll work just fine.  (Really should've had that first cup of coffee before replying to emails).   That cable will work fine for soundboard outputs to 1/8" but, as mentioned, you'll need the other ends for mics.    Regardless, the cables are clearner than running adaptors and the like.

I'd drop Darktrain or Ted a line as I'm sure they can build a better cable for you (techflexed, even) for around the same price.

That particular cable won't work for mics > recorder unless your mics have female XLRs, which I've never seen but then there is a lot I've never seen.

< eta dual female XLR > stereo 1/8" mini will work just fine; way back when I used to run Nak 100s > dual female XLR>stereo 1/8" mini > D7 or JB3 without any problems >

I picked up a 2 female XLR>1/8" cable at the local Sam Ash store. Only about 12" long; they may have had longer. I just use a 10' female to male 1/8" extension cable when need be. Got it to take the output from two AT battery boxes (one for each mic) to a M10; works great on a soundboard too

Ted made me this exact cable that I use to run Nak 300s directly into a M10.  3 feet long with 1 feet of techflex to the 1/8 connector.  Right angle XLRs.  Perfect for my onstage jazz recordings I am predominantly doing.  Can use regular XLR cables to extend for open gigs.  AWESOME build quality and reasonable price.  HIGHLY recommend this route.

Thanks for all the input. I went with the below only it will be a longer cable for running on a stand. Got some open taping next month so I'll get to try it out then.

Any updates on whether this is the best solution to go dual XLR (soundboard) to 1/8" mini plug (M-10)? I need to pick up a cable for an upcoming show at a venue with XLR-only outs.

I use a regular XLR cable(s) to get from the board to my recorder and then use a Hosa adapter cable for dual female XLR > 1/8" stereo mini plug (about 18" in length). In my case, I add attenuators in between if needed because some signals from the board are too hot.

ETA: I think this is the one:

I bought it at a local shop that has microphones and accessories.

Thanks. I probably have some XLR-to-XLR cables somewhere if I need an extension, I guess.

Anyone have experience with whether the M10's Line In generally needs an attenuator for XLR board feeds? I've found it to be fairly low-gain overall.

+T thanks man! I need to grab one of those to toss into my gear bag :)

I agree and do the same thing! I run and recommend 15'-20' Straight XLR->Straight XLR cables, and then use the appropriate adapter if I need to go to 1/4" or 1/8". It's better and more versatile to patch a variety of SBD's that way IMO! You'll always have the XLR ends of the cables if needed, and you can just use adapters on the ends if you need to run a different connector/cable format at the recorder end!

MUCH easier and cheaper than having separate cables for every kind of different connector style IMO! As always, YMMV ;)

This appears to be a longer (5') version of the same cable as above, for about the same price, FWIW:

Nice find +T 8)

For me personally, I like the smaller one because I won't use it much and it'll take up less space in my gear bag the smaller it is! Plus, my Straight XLR's for SBD patches are 15' long, so I don't really need the extra 5'! That said, both look like great options and I definitely need to grab that shorter Hosa Y Cable from above that's only $12! Thanks again for the links guys!

Next up, I need some Straight XLR->Straight RCA adapters for the SBD ends of my XLR's, so that I can easily patch a SBD that only has RCA outs! That should cover me pretty good on SBD patches! RCA & XLR OUTs for the SBD ends, and XLR & 1/8" INs for the recorder end! Do most SBD's have a MALE XLR OUTPUT ??? Female XLR end of my cables for the SBD end, and Male XLR connectors for my recorder end, correct? I RARELY get a SBD patch, but I'd still like to be prepared for almost any situation I'd have patching the SBD for my 70D's, and just wanted to make sure that most SBD's do have a MALE XLR output, and NOT a Female XLR out!

I recently got some used 15' GakCables from my good friend Dustin[aka caymanreview! Thanks again buddy ;D] for the RARE times that I get a SBD patch, or if I needed my +60v PFA setup extended even longer than it already is! Well, I also wanted to be prepared for ANY SBD output possible[XLR/RCA/1/4"], so I just ordered these two pairs of adapters so that I can easily go from the XLR ends, to the 1/4" jacks, or the RCA jacks depending on which board it is, just by switching out adapters at the SBD end! Should make patching the SBD nice and easy and I should now be covered for pretty much ANY SBD patching situation I might encounter, whether it be a tiny cheaper one, or a bigass Midas Pro ;D

I just thought that I'd share these so that anyone needing to do the same will know the cheapest route to get them! I was initially going to order from Full Compass for like the 4th time this week[seriously lol :P], but shipping was almost $13, so I said fu*k that and looked on ebay! I saved OVER the $13 shipping fee from Full Compass on eBay too and got all [4] adapters for only $34/Shipped! hahaha. That was the cheapest I could find them online, especially from the same site/place ;) Anyway, here's the links where I got mine at tonight on eBay!

Neutrik NA2MP Male XLR->Male 1/4" Mono Adapter [I just so happened to score the PAIR of them below from the same seller FWIW]

http://www.ebay.com/itm/172490903427?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

And here's a few pics of my new to me 15' GakCables that my good phriend Dustin hooked me up with, that I'll be using with the above adapters! Thanks again Caymanreview :)

Bean soundboard outputs in MOST cases will be XLR male, RCA female, or 1/4" female. If I know SBD is an option but don't know the SBD details, I always carry these two of these two adapters and then I know I am covered for 99% of what is in the wild.

I was confused about the male/female SBD output until I handed the male ends of my cables to Dickey Betts' sound guy. He said "wrong end my man". He saw the puzzled look on my face and told me to "ALWAYS look at the sound board as a microphone. All Microphones have a male xlr at the bottom, right?" "It's giving you the sound source."  Lesson learned, but I always have the XLR turnarounds, and various xlr converters in my big bag.

No worries! I would've done the same thing as you until I found out recently! That's how rarely I get a SBD patch! But now that I have 15' XLR's and those 1/4" & RCA Adapters, I should be able to easily patch just about any SBD :)

Naks and TEACs need a female XLR, not male.  That aside, yes, you can certainly get a Y cable or adapter that will go from XLR females to a single 1/8" (adapter would most likely be from 1/4" male x2 > 1/4" female x2 > 1/8" stereo. When I plug my Naks into a small recorder, I just use the original Nak cables and a Y adapter or a set of customs that do the same thing.

I use the above mentioned XLR cables into a Hosa CYX401F y-cable to 3.5mm TRS adapter with my Teacs.  It works fine, I don't really like using connected mics anymore so I like that setup even though it is bulkier and more stuff in the bag.

Given the choice, I would avoid Hosa.  I use the Y-adapters from them as well, and have to replace them far too often, to the point that I carry a new one with me so I'm ready when it fails. Specifically, I'm referring to the mono 1/4" (x2) >> stereo 1/8"...in other words, the one you'd use with the Nak cables.  If you need to use them, do your best to keep them straight.
