best match for AD1000
« on: January 18, 2005, 07:52:19 AM »
If you had an AD1000 as the "heart and soul" of your rig...what mics do you think sound best with it?
just curious...as i'm probably in that boat.  i'm leaning towards any AKG product.

wooo weee, hope you didn't spend much on it...most people would say hotdogs and grilled cheese but I think you are right w/ the akg's.  Gotta love an old ad1k that is still kickin'   :D  put a 148 in front of it...any pre being used?

I will say Neumann U89, just b/c of how sick those Big Cypress FOB's are.  :)

But I agree with Tim, just about anything sounds good in front of that grilled-cheese maker, especially when paired with a V2. Some of my fave Phish section tapes were B&K4011>V2>AD1000.

What he said! I'm not a fan of the AD1K pre so I'd run a pre...

Man I miss my Apogee...it has a fresh word clock but the power supply went.... :'(

the 1000 came to me ....very cheaply.
I am really enchanted by its sound.  I've run 414s and the c34 in front of it, and pulled the best recordings of last year w/either of these combos.  I have access to the c34 whenever I want, and i'll probably own 414s again, so I guess i'm good.
I dont mind the sond of the stock preamp in it either.  In fact, I like it.

I'd like to offer up a recording of the Jazz Mandolin Project
c34 cards @ 90 > AD1000 > JB3 as proof of what this sounds like.  I think its my best recording of 2004.
I can't upload...but I can mail copies.

I had a 500e for quite a few years. To me no one has come close to replicating the sound of the old apogee's with the new converters. m148->V3 was as close as I could find...

Nick -- I'd strongly consider the studio projects lsd2 as well -- I'm thinking the ad1k could compliment its sound QUITE nicely.  I find the lsd2 to sound quite similar to the various ld akg permutations out there.

I was a BIG fan of all the Phish tapes made in and around '99 that were simply Schoeps>AD1K.  Some of my favorite tapes....
And the Sultans... yeah the Sultans play creole

So you think the MMe sounds significantly different from the AD1000/500? Just wondering, never really heard any comparisions.

mic in for sure... the minime is bloated for sure. Mic in I think the minime has a little darker, heavier coloration to than the older units... this is reduced run linein but I still hear it. I like the minime line in, mic in notsomuch... to me it just doesn't come close to the older units though. I went straight from a 500e to a minime and the difference was pretty dramatic...

^^^^^
with all the cheap minime's floating around, I have been mulling over grabbing one and trading in my tmod UA5 so that i could do 24 bit easier/bit perfect with the apogee.....

but I will have to do some listening to some shows where the taper used the mme solely as the pre/ad as i want to
