so that i could do 24 bit easier/bit perfect with the apogee.....

Why would the Apogee be easier and any more bit-transparent than the UA5?  ???

I personally agree w/trey schoeps>m248(low gain)>ad1000(wide open).  I've heard the same rig run differently
with crappy results.   I also ran and really liked the 480>m148>ad1000, just ot as defined as the schoeps combo I thought.
I miss my ad1000, still runs just loses it lock on the clock and has to cycle to find it.over & over.

fwiw - it is my understanding that the minime really shines at 24bit... I haven't listened to it but I have had a few people tell me this.
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

I shouldn't do this, 'cause I love the MBHO603a >> AD1000 tapes, but in the grilled cheese vein:

i would agree with trey and tim. schoeps>v2 or m248. check out wsp 4.28.02 (mixon) for the 248 and wsp 11.25.00 (hubert) for a nice 4v>v2>ad1k tape. I could send you a few tracks of each.....LMK

What about Nak CM300's > AD1000 > JB3 ?  Any feelings on how that would sound?

I think the consensus is Schoeps. I love the 64's with AD1k, esp. with a PSP3 in font of it.

Check out Phish Japan 2000 for some good comparisons:

64>SX-M2>AD1k vs.  64>PSP3>SBM1  both sound amazing, but different IMO.

my favorite combo was my old one:

AKG483>V2>AD1K

But I'm really starting to like how it shines with my 148

just heard all the stories that the UA5s don't prefrom well at 24 bit and the mme's with USB out do fine

if you are running 24/96 lappy then the UA5 can be flaky b/c USB is working hard to keep up with the stream.  some have no problem, others have drops.  running 24/48 is the way to go if using a laptop.

as for 24/96 UA5 > microtrack I don't forsee any problem at all.  noone has actually done it yet b/c of the problems with the m-audio device at the moment, but i see no reason to buy a mme (i almost did twice in the past month) since the UA5 is going to kick some major ass at 24/96 into the microtrack.

either way, the only advantage of the mme to me, is that is has the ability to output a 24 and 16 bit digital signal at the same time.
the ergonomics of the box suck big time, and i am def. sticking with the ua5 for 24/96 > microtrack

schoeps all the way.  i like the vms02ib pre-amp (schoeps) use the actives and then your choice of capsules.

also the m248 sounds amazing with WSP and schoeps+ad1k

Yes, sorry, I resurrected this post.  I was wondering what Nak CM300's > AD1000 > JB3 would sound like.  I'm buying an AD1000 from the yard sale from K.C.  The AD1000 and the JB3 seem like an awesome match, Toslink to Toslink, 16 bit signal.  And good flexibility down the line with phantom power and pre-amp if I change mics and 20 bit if I change recorder.

The only downside seems to be the amp draw which is ~1 amp.  So big batteries are a must.  Is that why it's called a grilled cheese maker?
