Windscreens for Oktava MC-012s?
« on: June 01, 2006, 12:13:47 PM »
I might be doing some outdoor recording with my Oktava MC-012s in a month or so, and figure I should get some windscreens. The mics were bought from The Sound Room

http://sound-room.com

and they sell windscreens

http://sound-room.com/customer/product.php?productid=35&cat=13&page=1

which are shown on an Oktava MC-012 in the picture, so I know they're compatible with the mic, but they're US$49 each, which seems a little pricy.

I checked Sound Professionals, and they have about 100 different screens

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category/395/mics

but none that seem to be (specifically) for the Oktava MC-012. (I checked SP because I might be ordering something else from them, and could combine the orders.)

Are the ones from The Sound Room worth it? Which model from SP would be right? Or can I just walk into my local musical instrument store and find a screen that fits the mic?

Any help/info/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Aloha,
Brad

I'm a fan of the Shure A81WS (~$70/pr), others the DPA UA0896 (~$40/pr).  I have both, and find the A81WS more effective.  YMMV.  Either will fit the MC012s.  Any w/s that's roughly 20mm / 0.75" inner diameter will fit the MC012 and most other small diaphragm mics.

If you go cheapo from Radio Shack or some such, they probably won't work very well - most inexpensive windscreens are meant more as popscreens than windscreens.

Alternatively, go cheapo but add dead rats.  Search for "dead rats" here on TS and you'll find plenty of threads / pics discussing how to make 'em.
