1 large / 1 small condenser pair for outdoor stereo recording?
« on: November 25, 2005, 01:09:06 PM »
Hey fellas.....here are some specs on mics I currently have.....1 large/1 small diaphragm....can I do XY with these or will the 2 different types of mics make for a bad recording in that setup?  Is there a technique for recording with large/small combos, or is the technique to get some new mics?  Im hunting around for a decent pair of starters, but wanted to get opinions from the pros on these specs....I would rather wait to get a better pair of mics if these will produce a poor recording than ruin a recording of a good show trying to use these.....they tested ok with my home stereo cranked up, not sure what the spl level was....seemed like I had to turn up the gain a fair amount on the AD20......any thoughts would make my day :)

To bad the LD is not multi pattered - Could have set them up M/S.
I would also recommed the same mic's for xy.

Good Luck

Also assuming that LD is like any other LD i've used, I wouldn't want to point the diaphram at the ground.

you're probably gonna want to just buy a pair of standard starter mics.  the mics used most widely are the ones that sound best for recording live music usually.  might wanna check out the Studio Projects C4 or the AKG C1000.  but if you would be able to achieve a nearly dead center location with the 2 mics you have you could mount the LD directly above the SD and point them both at the center of the stage.  more of a single point stereo technique but it might sound ok once you mix the 2 mics together in post.
Really not very evil at all now...

cool....thanks for the input again....looking at a pair of c4's.....any suggestions on outdoor windscreens for them, or do the ones they come with work ok?  I would like to try and use these mics Ive got, but I fear they will produce poor results in the field

Thats my new rig :)

Going to try to get Otiel & Peacemakers and the Lee Boys in Jax on Dec 4th as my 1st real shot at a real recording!!  Its indoors and I am more of a festival kind of guy....but I think it will be a good test run :)

btw....have some sennheiser HD477 open back phones....will these do the job just to check in on things or do I need to get something that will isolate more?
