Simple stand/cable setup for AT 853?
« on: April 06, 2009, 04:01:00 PM »
I own a pair of AT 853s, or in my specific case, the Sound Professionals CMC-8 bodies for the AT943s, with the mod for the U853 caps. While I used to have a "full-size" rig I found over time that it didn't get enough use to justify the extra space it took up, and now I usually run the 853s or DPA 4061s in a low-profile setup.

However, I do attend just enough shows where open taping with stands is widely accepted that I would like to have something I could use to get the mics higher above the crowd.  I feel like I've seen some folks on here who run 853s on a stand, so it must not be a totally ludicrous idea.

Thing is, mine terminate in a 1/8" stereo miniplug and the cable isn't that long.  I'm powering them off of a Sound Professionals battery box and running that into a R-09HR.

I realize an idea setup (well, ideal with these mics) would involve mini-XLRs, a preamp, and a bunch of other stuff I don't have or have much use for.  What I am really thinking here is just a basic, good stand (at least 12'), a high-quality cable with M/F 1/8" (since the battery box and the R-09 are also 1/8" stereo) and an x/y bar.  What is the best solution on this pricewise?

I bought an extension cable at Sound Pros (pick whatever length you need) and they also sell a nice flexible stereo bar that works with the 853s.

Remember to use the code "taperssection" at checkout for a discount if you go that route.

For a stand, you may want to check the yardsale. Seems someone is always selling one.

I run my AT831's on a stand.  When I bought my mics, I bought a 10' extension cable from Sound Pros that I use with my stand.  With the clips I have, the mics clip perfectly on a yardstick.  I have the yardstick pre-measured with configs for ORTF on one side and DIN on the other.

Check your email. I sent photos of the AT mounts and t-bar. Feel free with any questions.
