Winscreens
« on: March 26, 2003, 01:46:34 PM »
With all this sock talk I was just curious if any AKG blueline users can tell me if the windscreens the mics come with do a good job at outdoor shows (I got mine last november) or should I invest in some beefier screens.

Thanks for any input!!!

Generally the stock WS are for indoor usage and will help cut down on the light breeze.  But that is about it.

Get the dpa windscreens for outdoor use.  Forgot the part number, but the retailers will know what you are talking about.  As much foam is in the screen, there is even more in the price.

UA0896 are the DPA's and I used them in all environments for the bluelines...no problems and no wind.

The big-ass Shure windscreens (A81WS) are fantastic.  They're just...BIG.  But they're all I use outside, now.

For some reason, those don't look like the Shure's to me - too round.  Maybe it's just the angle.  Anyway, here's another pic from the Shure site:

http://www.shure.com/photos/bigones/a81ws_large.jpg

Tough to get a feel for their size since there isn't an external reference.  But if you look at the lower left of the picture, you can see the area where the mic slides into the windscreen.  This is a ~20mm slot for the mic so it gives some idea.

I can take pics when I get home if anyone wants to see them on mics, on a shockmount/ORTF bar (although they'll absolutely eat up my KM140 caps!).

Can anyone recommend a retailer for these Shure windscreens?  The best I've found is about $60 ::gasp:: a pair!?!?

the windscreens i posted from the oades aren't the shures.  shows how much my brain can forget from just a summer ago.  i think the ones on the oade page may be the schoeps w5d's??  anyway, thanks for posting that other pic.

$60/pair may sound like a lot for windscreens.  The DPAs I think are around $40/pair.  (Check out the prices on Schoeps windscreens sometime for sticker shock!!)

But the way I look at it is:

I've already spent a boatload of cash on my gear and I'm not going to let a cheap, crappy pair of windscreens hose my recordings.

IMO, it's a small investment to make to ensure your outdoor tapes come through with quality.

Sorry, I don't know of a retailer that sells them for < $60/pair.
