Where are you getting your Schoeps?
« on: June 26, 2021, 02:34:00 PM »
Where are you all finding/purchasing your Schoeps mics?  From what I'm seeing, there's no price advantage to buying them Germany or Europe.  Is paying full retail at Sweetwater, etc. the only option for new mics? Aside from Ebay/Reverb, is there a market I'm missing?

I missed a sub-$1k stereo pair of MK21/CMC6 about 2 months ago, and since then I've seen only beat-to-death ones priced near full retail---maybe I'm not looking in the right places...

I don't think he can. As far as I know he is still banned.

The yard sale is as good a place as I have found.  Place an ISO or WTB post there and hope for the best from our fellow tapers.
Check the gearslutz classifieds, but schoeps don’t show up there often.  You could post a query in the GS remote possibilities forum and see if anyone has some ideas - lots of the classical people there use schoeps.
Location Sound and Trew in LA sometimes have schoeps, but usually at top dollar or well-worn.  Keep a daily eye on reverb.

Right now there's a lot of demand, with new microphones being sold as quickly as they're produced. No one can know how long this situation will last, but currently it's a better time to be a seller than a buyer.

(I'm referring here specifically to Schoeps microphones, but as always, speaking for myself and not the company despite my involvement with them)

As always, I would ask people to consider the small, specialist pro audio dealers that know the microphones the best. Our use of the microphones is kind of wedged between two bigger markets: film sound people and studio people. If there are dealers who are well aware of the taper community and its needs, and who serve those needs, I would urge you to reward them with your business and to "talk them up" here. It's good to have such people around.

+1 on the Yard Sale.  Schoeps are a lifetime purchase, so spending a little more a retail store or site is not necessarily a bad thing.  You'll use the heck out of them.

I concur.  My MK4's are almost 30 years now and have recorded well over 1,000 shows.  Now that music is happening I thing the yard sale will not have lots of Schoeps as tapers sold off extra gear already.  That said, ordering a new pair from a reputable dealer does get a full warranty and the mics will hold value well.

I have bought all of my new Schoeps mics + caps from digitalaudioservice.de in Germany. They're always giving me a discount when buying pairs of bodies or caps. Last items I bought were a pair of CMC1L bodies for 749 EUR/piece (after taxes). List price is 729 EUR PLUS taxes (~ 867 EUR after taxes). So I saved 236 EUR on the pair. It never hurts asking a reputable dealer for a discount. ;)

I bought my matched pair of 41v in January 2017 for 1,199 euro, $1,311 US, from Digital Audio Service:

https://digitalaudioservice.com/

I don't believe the exchange rates are as favorable now, but you can't go by the website prices. I asked for a quote on a matched pair mk4, I'll report back with the amount.

My 4v are 23 years old, I bought them for $1,300 in 2016, they were Matt Kinder's (Rest in Peace) caps, I'm honored to be running them, particularly  >:D. I was told by Schoeps that they didn't match back then but they are consecutive serial numbers and very, very close. Still going strong, knock on wood, they've never been serviced.
😈 Mk4v/41v>nbob actives>Baby nbox>Oade warm mod Marantz 620.

Open: 4v/41v>nbobs>Nicky mod Naiant PFA>Oade warm mod 661.

Home: the Stereo Hospital budget refurb rig: Lappie>DragonFly Cobalt/Red with Jitterbug>Nikko NR520/Sansui 221>B&W V202 speakers.

Oh the caps from your Thievery Corp etc are Kinder's old set? Nice.
RIP Matt.

I'd rather listen to Thievery, and be GLAD I knew Matt than be sad that he's gone.
Dig the sounds and think of Matt and keep his memory alive.
First time I ever met him was a cold january 1990 (maybe december 89?) and he was at an indoor show at the old Furst Rock club, in the St Louis entertainment district of Laclede's Landing.
Due to the cold weather, Matt was wearing bright green bib ski pants and due to the band he was grooving hard.
His bibs looked like super flared bell-bottoms, because they have room for big old downhill ski boots, so he looked WAY HIP.
Great vibe and I'll always recall his big smile!!!

So the quote I got from digital audio service is 1276 euros for a matched pair of mk4 caps. About $1520 US. There is also VAT but for me, they declared a nominal amount, VAT came to like $39.

US price seems to be $1780.

Usually when I buy things in the UK, one pays the VAT, then gets a refund minus a VAT-refund-processing fee. You usually save around 14.5% over the listed price depending on which processor company they use.

If it is a purchase that not pressing or urgent I would wait for something to pop up in the Yard Sale.  Although I have a slight bias as all three pairs that I have I found in the Yard Sale.  I got a good deal on my CCM4's as part of a package deal and I got a steal on the other two matched pairs (MK8 and MK5) from someone who was getting out of the game and wanted $$ for his new hobby.  Times have changed but I would not give up on finding a used pair. Good luck!
