d50 in for service today
« on: January 09, 2012, 02:11:11 PM »
 >:(

has had some problems locking up, either won't turn on, while just on, or while recording. Solution until the other day was to pull out the battery pack and wait a while, then reinsert it. Now that won't work.

sony d50 less than 2 years old, started acting up 3 months ago, so the trouble free lifespan has only been a year and a half..... maybe 60 sets recorded on it, always in padded case, never dropped or otherwise abused.....

$135 min charge, plus 20 for mailing/insurance..... we'll see what it costs to fix. One of the shortest life spans I've noted in a recorder, my sharp md is still running strong after 8 + years.....

I'd be interested to know what the diagnosis was of the issue. My D50 has been trouble free and I bought it when they initially were released.

I know it's all anecdotal, but my D50 has been dropped three times on concrete from waist height (one on the first day of ownership bent the cage that protects the mics) and has performed flawlessly for over three years, recording over 200 sets of live music. I think this may be the first thread I've seen for a D50 with serious issues.

I would never sell mine, 'cause I love it. And I just admitted on an open forum that it's been dropped three times.

I'll let you all know what was the prob and what it costs to fix. using the old MD again, still performing flawlessly. I actually think it's closer to 10 years old, certainly great lifespan, including the little battery still holds over an hour use, but it will work for 2 -3 with a AA in the spare battery attachment.....

Please do. If anything ever happened to mine, I'd be tempted to scrap it and pick up an M10 depending on the $$ of repair.

unless you are using the optical, I'd ditch it and get something else.

Except that he is in for a minimum $135 charge, so it is only $90 more than he is already on the hook for.  At that price, I'd fix it.  If nothing else, you might be able to sell the fixed D50 for $400 or so and then buy an M10.  That would put the total out of pocket costs at less than $100, which is better than just eating the $135 diagnostic fee and going straight to a new recorder.

based on the SHITTY life span of the unit, I'm hitting them up for a price reduction. Will it work? I doubt it, but worth trying. I think I'm going to get it fixed nonetheless.  :angry3:

I missed that it was inclusive, I was working on the assumption it was 135 + 225. my bad

got it back today, never a word from them about when and what was happening. shipped it back to me UPS when I asked for US Post. Charged me $240 "replaced the mount PCB, cleaned and performed the final function test" on the packing list. No price listed anywhere on the packaging, I had to go on line to check my visa to see what they charged.

I had asked them to lower the repair price based on 1.5 years trouble free service, they never acknowledged even getting that request.

they sent multiple "how'd we do" e mails ( 3 in one day) and yet were not reachable by e mail themselves, even from their web page. Never responded to phone calls asking when it would be done.

rating of their service? 6/10 so far

unit seems to work is the only real positive

Latest news and a decent conclusion

I tried  about 10 times to post to the Sony "professional page" about my experience. It kept saying that I was using special characters in my message, so I eliminated $, etc, in attempts to get it to work. Then it said that I was typing the captcha in wrong....so, I kept e mailing whatever I had for Sony addresses, and got replies back like "we are not allowed to forward e mails to the professional group", and of course, more and more automated replies saying they would respond within 6 hours, giving my message an incident number, etc......so, basically continued frustration.

I got an e mail back today finally, the ONLY reply I have ever gotten from the service center (Teaneck NJ) that although not acknowledging that the life span of the unit was not adequate (18 months/70 hours total) or expressing any agreement with any of my contentions about the build quality or answering my question as to whether there was any warranty to the unit as it was repaired  DID HOWEVER rebate me 100 dollars US (using that rather than a "special character"  ;D

so, I got the repair for just over the standard diagnostic fee of $135.

Alls well that ends well, and sometimes it pays to be determined....... ;D ;D ;D ;D

also on the plus side, the unit did fine the other night for 3 sets. a big 1.5 hours on the repair so far.
