This topic should be moved to the computer area, but to record on your PowerBook initially I would look at Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/  There are other applications out there that I like better, but this one is priced right (free) and will get you started. Others you might consider include Peak, Spark, SoundStudio.

Peak: http://www.bias-inc.com/
Spark: ??
Sound Studio: http://www.freeverse.com/soundstudio/

All of these are commercial applications and will cost you money.

I'd recommend staying away from Peak.  Definitely get on a download of Spark (it's not sold/supported anymore - you'll have to find copies elsewhere) - it has a non-standard UI but it's very easy to work with and pretty powerful.  Sound Studio is a great way to start as well, but at this point I'd wait for version 3 before buying it.

I'd recommend staying away from Peak.

And why is that? I've been using it  for 8 years now and it is constantly being improved.
