Title: Eternal question - cardioid/supercardioid use at 60,000 outdoor arena w.roof
Post by: Jonas Karlsson on April 12, 2015, 03:45:20 AM
Hello!

Summer is coming up and I'll be attending the mighty AC/DC at the Friends Arena in Stockholm, Sweden in July (60,000 capacity arena).

Now. I got the AKG CK61 + CK63. CK61 is cardioid which I normally use outdoors, and the CK63 for indoor.

Friends Arena is an outdoor arena, but it has a roof that can slide shut if it's raining etc. Also crowd in Sweden at a show like this is usually very loud + we have the stupid dB-laws here that says not over 100dB at shows (aaaarrrghh!).

Which mic would YOU have used? I will try to get a position on the floor with as little screamers as possible, but we all know how fast a good position can turn into a bad one - with no option to move, depending on the day and show.

Word is free - give me your thoughts!

/Jontebus, Sweden

Personally I would run 63's in that scenario since while it may be considered outdoors there is the seating on both sides that rise up like walls. The hypers will help with the crowd & since they are more directional provide a cleaner overall recording. I would also be sure to use the PAS method to capture as much direct sound as possible from the PA.

If you're not close I'd say it's a good time for hypers.

Yes, my thoughts too... This place is known for shitty livesound too, and it's not outdoors in that way of a festival...

Just for my curiosity: PAS-method??

Point At Stacks  :)
There is a thread on it here, and I'm sure there are other threads on it as well.

The challenge is part of the fun!  LOL.  I agree though, it's not the most "taper friendly" circumstances.

Yep - and the place is known to have terrible sound...

As long as AC/DC makes a good show, I think I'll be alright with the AKG CK63  :D
