or hang on to the mp-2 for when the ad1000 craps the bed.... and it will. If you are mid show and it loses sync, you'll need something else to power the mics. I've seen it happen and had it happen to me!
well i just wanted to chime in here... i own a pair of MBHO's (603a/200 also have the ka100dk omni's)
I run mbhos>mp2>ad2k+>D8. Used to be mp2>p1 but sold the p1 and picked up the ad2k about 4 months ago.
Honestly, i think the mp2 pre perfectly accents the mbho's. apogee is nice, but sure hard to get parts/repairs on those old ad1000's. main reason i never bought one.
i have toyed with the mini-me and although it's a great unit, i wouldnt buy one. I ran mbho>minime using the 48v from the minime at hi-sierra this year because the 2k was out of comission.
many times, i like to STEALTH. the ad1k, minime, ad2k even v3 are all units that would make stealthing difficult - especially a venue that's hard to sneek stuff in. the mp2 can be crotched pretty easily.
when i stealth, i run mbho ka200n>603>mp2>d8
*(ran that on wed. night at the hollywood bowl for mmw/scofield/roy hargrove)
anyway, that brings us back to the mp2/ad1k question....
I would do some comparisons, but i think you'll find it's not worth the extra battery power or hassle to run mp2>ad1k versus just straight ad1k with the preamp. i've run that combo before in the past and it's sounded excellent (i borrowed j. schmidt's ad1000 at bisco kahunaville in 2001)
Hold onto that mp2 if you can - from what i heard they were discontinued to allow sound devices more production space for their newer units like usb pre and the new 722hd recorder that will be coming out...
i just don't think that purchasing an ad1000 at this point is the greatest idea - seeing as how they are so difficult to fix if something goes wrong... i would go with something like the minime or the v3.
or, if you can afford it, run the mp2 and get an ad2k+ and run mp2>ad2k+...
i hope some of my rambling comments helped in some way....
peace,
ian stone
