What monitors are you using?
« on: November 23, 2017, 12:37:22 PM »
And do you like them?

I am contemplating picking up a new pair of monitors for post work.  I am currently using a pair of old NHTPro A-10s and an even older pair of JBL 4406s (and, of course, the  always useful auto sound system).  I was wondering what others in the community are using and what you think of them.

Thanks!

I have a pair of M-Audio AV40's and like them pretty well. B&H has had them on sale twice (that I know of) for a really good price. I think I actually got these on a "Deal of the Day" for something like $79.95

JBL LSR308’s with the matching sub (LSR 310 I think it is). I’m happy with them, particularly since calibrating them to the room with Sonarworks Reference.

Another vote for JBL. I've got a pair of 305s, though.
I did quite a lot of research before I bought mine. From what I've read they're superior to the KRK Rokits (in the same price range) in terms of build quality.

FWIW: There's a good overview on (home) studio monitors on

I  have limited space and budget so my Tannoy Reveal 402 work for me... but I hardly use them cause they can be heard next door in the apt. manager's office.  :shrug: These are the smallest of this line with 4" drivers and I'd expect the low end to improve as you went to the 502 and then  the 802.
Ten- four on the Tannoy 402's.  I love the size as space is a consideration and they sound terrific.

My setup is a little unusual - Acoustic Research M2 two way bookshelf speakers from the 80s (8 inch driver and a 1 3/4 silk dome tweeter) with a powered Polk Audio 10 inch sub crossed over at ~100hZ.

Line Audio CM3/OM1 || MBHO KA500 hyper>PFA|| ADK A51 type IV || AKG C522XY
Oade Warm Mod and Presence+ Mod UA5s || Aerco MP2(needs help) || Neve Portico 5012 || Apogee MMP
SD Mixpre6 || Oade Concert Mod DR100mkii

pocket sized - CA11 cards > SP SB10 > Sony PCM A10

Dynaudio BM5 passives, driven by a Bryston 2B have served me well for years.

I will be adding a pair of Neumann KH120s as soon as I find a price that meets my available cash.

I am interested in the Neumanns as well.  I’m hoping that someone who already has them comments on this thread.  Pricing, unfortunately, seems pretty uniform - or at least I have yet to see anyone put them on sale in any significant manner.

Adam Audio A7X's here. I absolutely love the soundstage and the tweeters!

Wish I could afford to bump up to the A77X.

I also check things on Grado RS1's. again, I need to bump up to the RS1E's some day when I have the cash.

^ Any movement here? Those Neumanns are the right size, but holy smokes do they want to sell any of them or not?  :o

No holiday sale or anything.  I don't know if Neumann ever runs sales on their gear. I suspect not.  They seem to do pretty well at retail price maintenance (or at least holding a minimum advertised price).

Not "Monitors" in the strict sense, but I use the Eminent Technology lft-16 speakers. They sound amazing. (http://www.eminent-tech.com/index.html?fwd=LFT16.html)

If I can't listen on my nice stereo, I use headphones, either grace design m903> akg k701 or mytek dsd-192> hifiman 400,

Just following along since I may have to get some small monitors and abandon the Senny HD700's due to tinnitus.  I used to have my DAW hooked straight to my VR4Jrs but space limits that ability these days.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1134162-REG/jbl_jbl_laser_305_studio.html

I just bought this set and am really happy with these so far. The Senal volume controller is a really nice bonus, as are the foam isolation pads.
Once I learn the characteristics of these I think they are going to help me put out a higher quality finished product.
But right out of the box they sound absolutely phenomenal. I like to just let music play all day on these...

I had the Audio Engine A2's for the last two years and have not been too impressed with them. the dome tweeters as opposed to horns seem to suck. That said, I received the Audio Engine S8 sub woofer as a Christmas gift and the combination finally has my oddly shaped listening area sounding pretty good (small 8x12, dormer style room with sloped roof). https://audioengineusa.com/shop/subwoofers/s8-powered-subwoofer/

all in all I would not rec the A2's for their less than stellar tweeters.
music IS love

When you get confused, listen to the music play!
