Title: PCM-M1 vs. UA-5 front end
Post by: BobW on January 21, 2004, 07:10:15 PM
Is it worth putting the Edirol UA-5 in front of a M1 ?

I remember Sony's blurb that stated that the M1 was "nearly as good as an SBM-1"

Taping rock/bluegrass/folk/blues.
Currently using MC-012s, with TLs in my sights for stealthing.

Usually CD is the output, some archiving.

I would say the UA-5 has a better pre and ADC than the M1

i really think the ua-5 out in front is a worthy investment.

UA5 definitely has better mic preamps, and I would say it is a better A/D at 16bit.  I think the favorable comparisons between the M1 & stock SBM1 were basically the A/D, taking a line level signal.

Running the same rig, MC012s and M1, the UA5 is amazing. Well worth the investment.

you will want a pre of some sort so you don't have to use the mic input on the m1.  I don't know how the adc compares, though.
