DAMN...
Almost $4,000 for a pair of mikes and Neumann wants $400 each for the shock mounts? (actually, I found them for $300 each, but STILL)
These come with the swivel mounts, and they are rubber mounted/isolated (as is the capsule) but they take up ALOT of space trying to mount M/S or Blumlien. The factory shock mount attaches at the base of the mike, with the screwdown ring, taking the place of the bottom of the swivel mount.
Anyone see/know of a LESS EXPENSIVE shock mount, that can be attached in a similar fashion?
I'm busy scraping together the $4,500 for the new Canon 1D MK II that's coming in 30 days. Just don't have $600 to blow on shock mounts (but on the other hand, would hate to see an $1800 mike fall 15 feet to a concrete floor from a rigged shock mount).
Any tips would be appreciated...

Only $37 apiece...not sure how great they are, but at a tenth of the price...

You might want to look at the stock shockmounts for the ADK TL. I believe the TLM-170 and the ADK TL are basically the same width. I feel your pain though, I am drooling over a set of Neumann basket mounts for the U89i's, but no way am I spending $560 on a pair of shockmounts.

rick, might i suggest you try running them without shocks- i used to own a pair- the internal shock on the diaphragm always seemed to be plenty for me.

the 170's are much wider than the TL's...TL's are just slightly bigger than the u89's

I have 2 u89 mounts, came with my mics... great deal.
I use Rode LD mounts. Significantly cheaper and holds the u89s snuggly. Only problem is that you can't suspend them vertically, so X/Y is out unless you can use a Shure vert bar and lay the mics on their side, as it were.
I bring one of my u89 basket/screw down mounts with me when I run x/y-blumlein-m/s and use that to suspend one mic upset down and clamp the other mic below it.
also, aren't the tlm170's (liek the u89s) internally shockmounted? Do you really need another shockmount. I've heard some people assert that. I've never done a comparison but it's something to think about.

Aside from mechanically isolation the mic's from the stand, I was interested in making a smaller profile for M/S & Blumlien mounts.
With the factory mounts and windscreens, the clamp-on mounts for each mic end up being seperated by about 30 inches, plus the mic needs an extension on the mount, so a straight cable clears the thumbscrew on the clamp-on.
As commented in my original post, the isolation of the factory mount, and the shock mounted capsule appear to be sufficient for basic mechanical isolation (low freq structural vibrations induced into the stand), except for maybe a wookie actually hitting the stand.
I wouldn't really want to fly the mike on anything that didn't use the screw-on ring on the bottom to secure the mike.

I don't use shockmounts with the 170s - the diaphragms are suspension mounted inside and I've never had a problem with mechanical noise. There are a few configs that are more difficult (or impossible) with the swivel mounts since you can't rotate the mic in the mount like you could with shockmounts. The Neumann shockmounts are BIG, though, so I doubt they'd make a smaller profile. I guess maybe it would allow vertical x/y, m/s & blumlein instead of horizontal which could be "smaller".
