Title: Lunatec V3 to 744t after AD conversion - what cable is best
Post by: grindstone2 on August 01, 2019, 03:36:39 PM
Hi folks,
I am about to add a V3 to my recording gear and need to know what to use for the best digital connection to the 744 from the AES 2 out on the V3 (I assume only one XLR is needed since it's all code at that point)  - never done digital input

Thanks in advance.

Bob

just make sure its a proper 110 ohm digital cable. its a balanced connection so dont believe the hype theyre pretty much all the same

Thanks for the reply and the spec for the cable. What I am not asking is what connectors to put on cable.  Do I go XLR from V3 to BNC on the 744 or on the 744 side go simply XLR AES/EBU.

In that case it looks like all I need is an XLRf from the AES2 port from V3 to XLRm AES/EBU 1,2 on the 744 to get Professional AES3 digital audio signal.

Can anyone pleaase confirm?

THanks

Wait, are you going Digital out or analog out?

If you are going analog out be sure you attenuate (I think the 744t has a setting) down about 10-12db because the XLR out is HOT! So do some tests before you roll or that first recording will bite you.

Anyway: XLRM from the AES2 port from V3 to XLR AES/EBU 1,2 on the 744 is the way to go!

UNLESS you want to hear the noise floor of the preamps of the 744t, then you want analog. Since the V3 both ways of sending out the signal always on, I'd probably run my first test using both into the 744t and see which I liked better. But I am an idiot with (apparently) time to waste!

I hope this helps! I'd love to see a picture of it all in the bag when the time comes.

Hi JB, Thanks for chiming in.
The plan is to go digital out to digital in on 744
Pic ?  Here - before the mics have been plugged in to the analog ins...see if this makes sense.

I'll test

Should be perfect!
The LINE out is hot but I've never had anything but a perfect signal from the digital out.

at minimum gain the 744T can handle +26dB input level
V3 puts out a max of +25dB on a balanced signal, so if you turn the 744t input level to minimum and then set levels with the V3 there is no way to clip it

Anyway: XLRM from the AES2 port from V3 to XLR AES/EBU 1,2 on the 744 is the way to go!

I also have these two components but I always assumed the two XLR ports on the 744 were strictly analog? The AES XLR port on V3 is strictly a digital stream, no? I've always used this cable to connect the V3, locking the BNC end to the digi posts of 744 but I'm always up for learning new tricks!
