Title: AKG sound
Post by: geoff piper on June 21, 2003, 05:35:59 PM
Do the 391's and the 481's have a similar sound? Do they like a ceartin pre and ad? I'm just thinking since my mics came in and there arent alot of 391 combinations tapes around, if listening to the 481 would give me a similar(not quite but good enough) idea of what they would sound like

yea yea  ;)i know warm UA-5 but im keeping my options open before I buy since I missed my first show yesterday and dont have another one for like 3 weeks  and I have to get a deck first. I went and watched a friend set up last night and I just sat there feeling like  ;D and  >:( because I cant wait to set up for my self and because I wasnt able to tape.

When I had my 393s I loved them!! :'(  I ran them with an Mp2 and loved the sound.  PM me for a copy of Phish 2-26-03 with this setup.

I personally never liked the sound of the 391's, but you know what they say about opionions being like assholes....everyone's got one. The 481's seem to have a much more flat response than the 391's do.

They're a little weak in the low end, not nearly as much as the EW's, though.  The transformer pre's seem to fatten them up nicely.

I wouldn't run them with a V2, but that's just me

hey, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

In that price range I'd go with a PSP-2 or 3

I would agree that when run in the wrong combination, they are definitely weak in the low end.  But as I sit here and listen to a tape of a local rock band I made tonight, I can tell you that the MP-2/Mod SBM-1 combo tightens it up.  In all honesty I am pretty sure the MP-2 has a fair amount to do with it since the SBM-1 on its own (which I ran with transformers for a while) does not have as nearly a good low end.

I think a w-mod UA-5 could have a nice effect on these mics though....

I used to run these with a dmic20. The bottom was a little weak but overall I really enjoyed the sound. I too would suggest a warm mod ua5 or possibly the mp2 combo :suds:cheers

I've ran 391's > w-mod UA-5 and 481's > w-mod UA-5.  Unless the w-mod is throwning in a lot of low's the 391's have plenty.  I can't believe people are saying the 391's don't have much bass??   ??? I've ran them for about 1.5 years and they as much bass as I'll ever need.  The main difference between the 391's and 481's is tightness, IMO.  The 481's have the same low end but much tighter.  The 391's can become "slightly" muddy and take away from the highs of the tape.  The 481's have a better balance of high's and low's.  Don't get me wrong, the 391's are the best mic for the price, but if you have the money for the 481's you'll be happier :).

Since the w-mod has more low's, I would really like to hear what people are saying about the presence-mod UA-5 and 391's.  The p-mod is supposed to have more mid's.  I would think that would be a better choice for the 391's since I was putting the bass-cut on the mic's a lot. - Phil

Phil good description.  In my experience not much bass is not an accurate description, but it can bet a bit muddy in the low end.

Thanks guys for all the info. No matter which way I go i think I'm going to eventually upgrade to the 481's but at earliest not until next year

I run 393's>unmodded UA5 & love it.
Plenty of bass, which surprised me when I first ran this combo, because people said it would be bright & thin, but I find it to be pretty pleasing. I'm eventually going to the 480's as well. ;)

How does the C480s > V3 combination sound?  This is the upgrade I was eyeing...

nice I like that idea of the unmodded UA-5 because I'm kinda rushing to get my whole set up done. I now have 3 weeks to get it all together. My only problem is that I want something that I wont want to upgrade quickly and an unmodded UA-5 might be something that I want to get rid of after 6 months... so I dont know.

Yeah, its unfortunate Oade doesn't sell unmodded UA-5's cuz I woulda bought mine from them so I could have it modded in the future.

If you're seriously looking at a stock UA-5 PM me & I'll tell ya how to get it for about $246 shipped.

Still unfortunate, tho, that Oade doesn't sell pure stock UA-5's...  :(

I ran 391's for a year or so & they do sound similar to the 480's. The 480's are just better at both ends of the sound spectrum, i.e. they are better with the lows (tighter) & crisper with  the highs, plus they handle higher spl's much better. You may have to run your roll off with the 390's where you would never need to with 480's. As far as 480>V3, it sounds real good. I'll run it this weekend probably for the "dead" (puhleeeze) in Camden on Sat night if I can't run FOB with the DPA's

You offically have scared the crap out of me...Now everytime I run them I'm going to say how much more I want the 480's... which pre did you ru  with them? I was looking at the MP-2>ADC-20 combo because I like the tapes that come out of that combo but I also like the tapes that come out of the UA-5 >:( this confuses me :newbie:n

actually I have never run the filter with the 391's.  The one time I tried it, it definitely took the life out of the music.  But with this being said, I have never had an experience where running the roll off would have been a significant help.

Dunno when they stopped, if they ever did. In emails I had with Doug before I bought my stock (just couldn't afford the D-mod) he said that they don't sell the stock unit because of lack of market.

He did tell me, though, that he's starting to reconsider their stance of not modding UA5's they don't sell.... Mentioned that requests of this nature are on the rise.

I ran my 391's analog first :o Then switched to DAT with a Zefiro in-box for a few months before I replaced them with 480's (which I also ran with the Zefiro for a while) then changed to a 248 & it has been nothing but money since then ;D The 390's are nice but the 480's are SOOOOOOOO much better, it's scary.

I think I'm going to go P mod UA-5... due to the fact that people say the 391's lack more highs than lows... Then deck, cables and stand and im set  ;D Also is the P mod UA-5 good for when i eventually upgrade to the 481's?

I have never tried the UA5 but Nick ran it for a while, it sounds nice & should do the job rather nicely if & when you upgrade. Taping isn't about spending money, it's about having fun. No matter what you run for a rig you should be having fun, if not quit. I do it for the love of taping, not to see how quick I can rack up more bills.

The stock ua-5 won't work as a field unit without the oade digimod done to it. they sell those for 350.00

digimod - 350.00
w-mod  -  500.00
p-mod  - 525.00

This is all true, however I was able to buy mine brand new (unmodified) for $240. Now, when the time comes that Doug decides he's going to start modding used units I'll be ready for the P or W or whatever he's doing to them then.

FWIW, it works quite fine for me as a field unit since I tape to laptop! Also, it works unmodded as a pre, just doesn't do A>D standalone without Doug modifying it.

For those of you good with a solder iron and nerves, I've seen a website that does a circuit board comparison between the stock & d-mod UA-5. Pretty sure googling for 'UA-5 dissection' will get you there.
