O.K....so I'm ready to change things up a little. Need some
Currently running:
Neumann>Audio Magic>Di-Port 24bitADC/pre>D-100 (or laptop)
Though I wish it were in the cards, ideally I'd do the 722, or the R-4, but that's too much dough.
I DO have a couple more doable options:
#1) I have enough enough to pick up a UA-5 w/ T+ mod...NOW.
or
#2) Wait for 6-7 months and do the V-3 route.
(I've eliminated the Mme option)
They both have their good points, and can both be powered in the field (unlike some of the other new boxes). I will be using DAT, so I can't go specifically with some of the fancy new boxes (like the FA-101 etc...)
UA-5 sounds decent, and is easy to go to laptop
V-3...well, it's a V-3, but is not laptop-ready without a digi-card.
What would you do? (please hold off on the "it's up to your ears" response). Just looking for LOTS of feedback from a whole bunch of different people. Bring it on!

buy the ua5 used and resell it when you save up the difference for the V3 (if you still want it)... if you buy used you will get almost all of your money back when you sell.
that's what I would do :)

Me, too.

great minds think alike ;D

only problem with the "buy used" is that I've never seen a used tmod plus ua5 for sale.
I'd see if you can try out any flavor of ua5 first and see what you think of its gain control, as it's a bit sensitive. If you don't mind the ua5's gain sensitivity, by all means pick up a tmod plus and enjoy, it's a (imho) FANTASTIC sounding piece of gear and you might not find any desire to "upgrade" to a v3.
On the other hand, if you find you hate the ua5's gain controls, you'll be better off skipping any flavor of ua5 and save up for a v3, etc.

What do you mean by matrix capablities? Are you talking about the ability to have multiple inputs active simultaneously? I've not had great luck with matrix recordings because the boards are so far back. When I do on-stage I'm usually doing 8-channel > 2-channel anyway.
I'm not worried about the gain control...I've been using another 24-bit machine that is ULTRA sensitive (Di-Port) so I handle that. Besides, I generally record around -8 anyway....
This is great feedback!!!!

OH...I got ya...because of the front XLR and the back RCA inputs.... I've been able to do it with the Di-Port.
