Digital In On MT II What to Use
« on: June 16, 2008, 03:02:30 PM »

Hi All

I would like to use the digital in on the MicroTrack II and be able to use it portable but have no idea whats out there. I don't what to carry a ton of gear so small size would be nice and ease of use. Also what mics to use with the digital input.

Thanks In Advance

If you want to use any recorder's digital input (not just the MT II), you'll need external mics, mic power, maybe gain (depending on gear selection and intended usage), and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC).

Do you have a budget?

I'm just starting out and money is a little tight. I just purchased the MicroTracK II and a 16gb CF card so I have about $500.00 now and will have to purchase pieces a little at a time.

for $500 I think you should go with a set of church audio microphones and preamp. They are lightweight and make great recordings.

new preamp + cardiod and omni microphones: $289
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,90474.0.html

right angle mini to mini plug. you can pick them up for as little as $5 at radio shack or you can have a member here build you one for $20

lightweight microphone stand: $40

mount for mini microphones: $40

thread adapter for mic stand to be compatible with your mount: $2

i would think that $500 could get you a set of Studio Project C4's and a digimod UA-5, dvd battery and cable, and kind kable spdif cable. that would be a pretty decent starter set imo.

Echo that.

You didn't say whether you prefer stand mics or body/hat-mounted?
If you get an UA-5, there's no better value than AT853Rx (now superceded by U853R). Phantom power adapters are included, and you can switch caps. All for a bargain sum, which leaves money over for omnis or hypers...

This guy is selling a pair, currently at $53 per piece:

Brand new, these are $126 each:

I bougth my pair at Alpha Sound, and can highly recommend them. When you ask for a quote, check for bundle price with extra caps:

this will not allow you to go digi in though
if that is what you want to do
if you don't mind going analog in this is a good option

it also depends on what you are taping, the church set up is a lot smaller and easy to carry in on you ;)
where the ua5 is prob going to give you more options as a whole but will require a bag most likely

I was thinking of getting a Denecke AD-20 with some self powered mics for ease of concealment and portability but I mite be wrong on this outfit. Also not sure of the mic's to use with it.  I'm trying to get away without using a phantom supply with the mic's. Also was looking at the M Audio Fast Track Pro in stand-alone mode but size wise I'll need a bag to carry everything.

How does this combo sound.

Thanks in Advance

what do you mean by self powered mics?
akg c1000?
or some soundprofessionals
the akg use a 9v inside the mic and/or 48v power
soundpro mics you can get away with using the recorder power but if you put a ad20 in there then you need a battery box too
don't know about the fast track pro

anyway the warm ua5 i linked you is a good deal plus he has a battery cable and stuff to go with it
it will give you lots of options
here is a ad20 if you have not seen it http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,104182.0.html

The Fast Track Pro does apparently stand up very well against a stock UA-5, but is inferior soundwise to the Oade or Busman flavor-modded ones:

Remember that you'd be dumbing down your MT II, since the FTP only feeds 24/44.1. Minor issue...
With roughly the same size, I'd much rather carry an FTP around than an AD20. That will solve your mic powering too.
There is an FTP on ebay now with a $130 BIN  pricetag.
