ok i just picked up the zoom h2  because i needed a deck for stealth taping this sunday .. i am taping the pete seeger 90th b-day party at msg, nyc and the zoom was 150 so i grabbed it . most likely i will be getting rid of it just as fast but for now i need to use it . the show is going to run about 6 to 7 hours .i grabbed 2 4 gig cards and it came with a 1gig card so i should be covered that way . what i need to know is are there any tricks to this deck . i am using a set of audio tech mini mics into a battery box into the deck . so my friend tells me i should use the line in instead of the mic in . is that the way to go . also if you can give me and helpful settings i should be setting the deck on that would be great . i know alot of people use this deck and the levels look good but the recording comes out all distorted so i really don't need that happening ..sorry for ramblin' any help would be great thanks for your time and have a smooth day .joe

http://www.2090.org/zoom/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=9745&start=0 contains the basic info.  The mic input is pretty noisy - either use an external preamp allowing line in, or use the built in mics (but that's not easy to do without being noticed!).

You can try going line in, but you'd need to add a lot of gain in the H2, which will add to the noise (but might still be better than going mic in).

In the long run, you'd better pick up a pre, ideally a CA 9100 (or 9000 if you're on a budget). There's one in the YS right now:

Hey Joe...

Joel here.  I just got one of those too and want to know how you like it.  I am intrested in upgrading to a R-09HR or PMD620 before I even open the box.  It was bought for me to satisfy a debt/favor.

Also, I really would like to get a copy of the show from you - either the SD cards or finished discs would be fine.  Keep in touch.  I'll let you know when I get the cool edit.

Now that I read the other posts:

What about using the H2 as a transfer deck.  Going from a Sony TC-D5M to the H2 in order to upload the SD card into CD wave, audacity... to edit and burn the discs of old shows.  Is the line in going to provide noise in that situation?  That is the reason it was bought for me.

I'm currently doing my transfers with a R-09, but will have to return it soon.
