Zoom H4n Recorder
« on: July 05, 2009, 02:51:42 PM »
Hey, folks! I'm new on here and rifled thru some of the posts and didn't see anything about this yet. Anyone know if this model would be a worthwhile purchase? Here's a list of it's features if your unfamiliar...

Up to 24-bit @ 96 kHz for High-definition Audio

Up to 32 GB SDHC cards for maximum recording time

Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) compatible time stamp and track marker

Auto-record and pre-record feature so you never miss a moment

Built-in reference speaker to check recordings

Onboard metronome and tuner · Variable speed playback capability for “phrase training”

Onboard mid-side matrix decoder for additional miking possibilities

“Stamina” mode enables 11 hours of continuous battery life

Large 1.9 inch LCD Screen · Built-in X/Y stereo condenser mics at either 90 or 120 degrees

4 Channel simultaneous recording using built-in and external mics.

Rubberized body for improved chassis protection

Built in mounting joint for tripod or mic stand mounting

USB 2.0 port for faster file transfer

Includes 1 GB card, wind screen, mic clip adapter, USB cable, Protective case and Cubase LE Software

This would be a first purchase for me and just wanted some authoratative input before pullin' the trigger. Thanks in advance. -Chris

The earlier Zoom H4 SUCKED. I'm still stuck with one.

The H4n is supposed to be improved in a number of ways, but given the quality of previous products by Zoom and Tascam, I assume the Tascam DR-100 would be a far better recorder unless the Zoom has features you can't live without.

I would never buy anything from Zoom again.

I'm not familiar w/ the H4 recorder. Is it limited in many apsects? This new one "looks" to be pretty standup. It's just that any investment in recorders is an undertaking and I don't wanna disappoint myself w/ crap equipment. Like I said, I am relatively a noob at this and not sure if thisa would be a solid investment as a first-timer.

Hey,
I have had one for a couple of months. I have used it out live several times, and at home quite a bit. In my opinion, it is a decent deal for 350. It has a lot of features that similarly priced recorders don't have. I also see where I may be upgrading in a year or so-not sure.
It has some quirks to it that can be worked around. I can't say I 'm thrilled with it, but again it is a fair deal for the money.
Any more questions I can answer, I will be glad to do so.

A majority of the people on this board like the Edirol R-09HR.  Give that one a look before you decide.

I only mentioned the Tascam DR-100 because I assumed duncanspoopy felt he needed the XLR inputs and phantom power the Zoom provides. If that's not the case, Belexes recommendation would be a far better choice (and even if it is the case, I'd still get something other than a Zoom).
