What gear bag for this rig?
« on: November 12, 2009, 06:07:20 PM »
Yet another gear bag question, I know... I've looked at previous posts, but as I've never had a proper gear bag, I have a little difficultly putting it in perspective.

Right now I usually just put my gear in a non-padded messenger bag and wear the bag, which works great for clamping and for "stealthing" at shows where taping isn't discouraged.

But as I've picked up some 4021s, and the more open taping I do, I think I need something a bit safer.  Biggest priority for me is minimal footprint; ideally I'd like something I could keep wearing during gigs and that I wouldn't feel uncomfortable wearing.

The typical gear I carry is relatively smalll:

Bogen Superclamp + short extension bar and if necessary, the articulated arm

7' extension bar (which doesn't go in the bag anyway)

t-bar/shockmounts/kwon bar as required

Deck: Either an R-09HR or, maybe eventually, an R-44
Pre: either nothing, a Church pre or a Naiant littlebox

Mics: Small mics, either 4021, AKG actives.. small stuff

cables.

Then just a flashlight, batteries and such things. I try to travel as light as I can.

Any suggestions? I see lots about the lowepro bags but again, I have trouble conceiving of how the various sizes fit with my needs

I have a similar small setup and I have the smaller size Sonicase.  I love that bag; it is wonderful.  Even that may be a little large for your needs, but it is only like a 1 cubic foot footprint.

You also may want to look at the Mountainsmith Cairn day pack.  I have the larger Day and it is bulletproof; I have had it for five years across four continents with heavy outdoor use and it is as good as new.

I would take your largest piece of equipment into a camera store and try out a bunch of bags - in your case this might not be so easy, but look up the R44's dimensions and find a similar-sized book on your shelf. I actually did this (with my equipment, not the book) and got a bunch of funny looks at first, but then when I dropped the money on the bag they were perfectly fine with it. :)

My current gear bag is a Lowepro Rezo 190AW which can be bought for $70 at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-Rezo-190-Camera-Bag/dp/B0009W8WEA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258124666&sr=8-2

What I like about it is that it is relatively small (for an open taping bag) but I can still run my 702 from the bag and have enough room for cables, a few clamps, gaffer tape, etc.  And the 'lid' is nice because you can easily just flip it open and closed to check levels, etc., while taping very easily.

I'm pretty much with everyone else on this.  After going through several high end bags, I'm back to the Nova line of bags and honestly, liking them as much or better than any high end bag I had (including Pegz and several PB bags) because of how well they zip everything up and they have enough zippered pockets to segregate whatever you might want to keep separate (like maybe the superclamp) to keep it from marring the other stuff in your bag.  With the PB and Pegz that have snorkels, I lost a few small things that fell out of the snorkels...and I was constantly freaking about maybe losing my mics or similar high end gear out of my bag...not so with the Nova.

So if I were you, I'd just decide on the appropriate size Nova bag based on the final rig you expect to end up with...obviously if you go with an R44 based rig you might need to size up to a Nova180 or Nova200, but if you stick with the littlebox or something smaller, you'll only need a smallish bag of the Nova160-ish size.

I suggest a Sonicase or a small Petrol. I don't know the model number (it doesn't say on it) of my small Petrol, but it's a great bag. I love my larger Pegz 1 too.

I assume the sizes roughly correspond to size, right, i.e., 180 is smaller than 190, 3 is smaller than 180 or 190 right?  The 3 looks about right for what I am thinking, I think...

I use a Rezo 180AW for my taping rig.  It fits my PMD660 perfectly and I have lots of room for mics and other stuff.

I have the 660 Portabrace and never use it...

I also use a Rezo 110AW for my camera.  I love the Rezo line of bags...
