iHP-140 in need of repair
« on: November 05, 2010, 07:30:28 AM »

Both my headphone and output have bad connections. Is there anyone on TS that does these type of repair jobs?
I haven't tested the digital connections but my headphones only come in on one channel, and as well the output does the same..

any ideas? anyone know of a repair shop in NYC? I'd much prefer to give the job to someone here..

Thanks!!!

Before sending the unit out for repair, use 90% alcohol and a dental brush for use between the teeth (oral B) and also on the jacks to clean those surfaces.... Oil on the fingers can and will get on the jack which is then transferred into the unit....  Those parts can go bad, but for the $5us you would spend on this stuff, check this first.

So after someone pointed me towards misticriver, this solution presented itself... I'm on it.

If you can't do it yourself, I found a guy on ebay that fixed my rio karma and its been solid since then.  He typically repairs rio karma's and ipods, I imagine fixing an iriver wouldn't be a huge stretch.

thanks georgios. i will be needing that person's contact
this 140 sat for a couple years unused after the headphone went bad, and now has some other issues.
in need of a new battery, also rockbox can no longer load. when i boot the iriver firmware it automatically goes strait into pause/rec mode and freezes.
I don't know yet if this has anything to do with the battery, or if it's some indication of a bad hdd.
time will tell, i have two other 120's that are getting rebuilt at the moment.

once this part gets replaced, I will post the results.

You might also compare your repair estimate with the cost of getting a new recorder. The digital I/O of the H140 is a lovely thing, but if you are not using that and can deal with analog input, $200 spent on a Sony PCM-10 or comparable unit might be a better investment. The hard drive and rechargeable battery of the iRiver are just going to go kerflooey sooner or later.
