Why use windscreens indoors?
« on: March 04, 2012, 04:55:19 PM »
This might be a dumb question. but why would one want to use Windscreens at an indoor show like a theater or Arena if Wind gusts are not going to be an issue?

Smoke protection though venues that allow smoking are getting fewer and fewer; also in some venues the sweet spot (or your reserved seat) is directly under ceiling fans or HVAC ducts. Usually the latter and once a ceiling fan or the breeze from the HVAC duct ruins a recording you'll start using screens out of habit.

Protection from smoke machines, cigarette smoke, dropping, and some places I tape have Big @$$ fans that will effect your recordings.  I always use screens.

The foam acts as a cushion if your mic stand takes a dive from people grabbing it since they can't stand on their own at the end of a show.

As the others said. I've had indoor shows ruined or at least marred by noise from AC that blows harder than a lot of outdoor wind.  Plus the aforementioned protection.  When I run my Schoeps without bodies, I transport them with the active cable attached and with the capsule in the windscreen, like a lot of guys do.

That's not to say I haven't run indoors without, but it's a risk.

This.  It's no fun and very time consuming going through your recording in post and manually taking each of those gusts out, if you even can.

All that's mentioned above, plus with my LD mics the large foam balls (I hope) will protect against  projectiles like glow sticks, balloons, H2O and lighters(Widespread shows)...
