Tascam DR-40 or DR-100mkII + Denecke AD-20?
« on: October 09, 2013, 04:34:02 PM »
My Iriver H140 just died. No power even with the AC adapter. I've been using it for a few years as a bit bucket with a Denecke AD-20 digital converter to capture my drumming during practices and my band during gigs. Now I'm looking at replacing it with one of Tascams. My initial thought was to buy the DR-100mkII which I would use with built in mikes for practices and with external mics and the Denecke for gigs.  However, I know equipment has improved in recent years.  Maybe I won't gain much using the Denecke and I can just save a few dollars and buy the DR-40 (which lacks a digital input).  Any thoughts?

Lotus Seven posted a comprehensive review of the DR100:  http://www.amazon.com/Tascam-DR100-Portable-Digital-Recorder/product-reviews/B001R65MFO

As I recall his other posts at GS indicate he started using a Denecke PS2 with it.

It is also important to be sure to get the MkII and not the first model as the MkII has improved preamps from what I have read.

IMO, I would ditch the Denecke and iRiver and start going 24bit with a newer recorder ;) The recorder is up to you and what your needs are ;) I always recommend the Sony PCM-M10, and MANY of us on ts.com own and LOVE the M10 ;) But there are a TON of 24bit handheld recorders that are all pretty cheap IMO!!!
