HOW TO: Seed a recording with Bit Torrent

(1/1)

Brian Skalinder:
All this assumes you already know how to compress your recording with FLAC or Shorten.  For links to software to do all this, check the bottom of the post.

Seeding your recordings using Bit Torrent is easy.  Simply:

[1] Create a torrent file for the files in your recording
[2] Upload to and register your torrent file with a BT tracker
[3] Seed

For taper-friendly recordings, bt.etree.org is the way to go, IMO - nice tracker, simple instructions (mostly).  Check out their website and follow the instructions.

For taper-unfriendly recordings (or if you, like I, prefer sites that track upload/download ratios), there's DimeaDozen.
[1] Create your torrent

Create your .torrent file (I use MakeTorrent) using the appropriate tracker URL:

[*]BT.ETree = http://tracker.etree.org:6969/announce
[*]DimeaDozen = http://bt.dimeadozen.org/announce.php
[/list]

This is really straightforward - only catch is making sure you use the appropriate tracker URL for the tracker on which you'll register the torrent.  Make sure you remember where you saved the .torrent file!

[2] Upload / Register Your Torrent

BT.ETree

BT.ETree's upload/register instructions are really easy - simply follow them.  A few notes on the form you'll fill out:

Upload File: < browse to the .torrent on your HD >
Torrent Name: < enter BT description here: date, band, etc. >
Db.etree.org Link: < not required >
Db.etree.org Source ID: < not required >
Db.etree.org Show ID: < not required >
Description: < paste your info file data here >
Type: < select Band Name, or Other if the band isn't in the list >
Verified to be Taper Friendly: < tick >
Send Email to announce: < tick >
DimeaDozen

Doesn't get much easier than this.  Check out the DimeaDozen upload page.  Note:  after uploading the torrent, you'll need to use the the torrent file downloaded from DimeaDozen for seeding, not your original torrent file you uploaded to DimeaDozen.  Why?  DaD personalizes the torrent files when you download for stats tracking.

[3] Seeding

[1] Fire up the .torrent downloaded from DaD on your local PC (I use ABC) - the BT client should run through a quick check of your files and then start seeding.

[2] Confirm on the DaD Account page or BT.ETree.org Tracker that your upload registered and the seed shows up in the listing.
