Safe Powering Option for DPA 4061's
« on: November 17, 2018, 01:17:35 AM »
Not sure if this should go in the preamp section or the microphone section...

Anyway, I have been using the DPA MPS6030 to power the 4061's. (See photo) Works fine, [and does pass for a garage door opener  :yack:] but there is no gain from the unit, it only powers the mics. Sometimes with quieter shows I'm wishing that I could add more gain.
..
Anyway, I got this awesome new Y-cable that terminates to 1/8" stereo mini plug so I finally now have a few more options for powering the mics.

Would my Church audio preamp (I think its the CA9100) be safe to use with the 4061's?  I've looked at the DPA 6030 manual and online and can't seem to find what the output voltage is...

I also have a Tinybox with PIP that is 8V I believe.

Thanks

Wow, what kind of quiet shows do you need a preamp for? I don’t need one for my 4061’s at all, and I record spoken word, acoustic and chamber music with a 9v battery box...

I record all kinds of different music, but it’s mainly the quieter acoustic shows I’d like to have a bit more gain with. Especially if I can’t get as close to the source as I’d like to.
I guesss now that I think on this a little further, what I’m really hoping for is not so much ‘more gain’ but really ‘more adjustable gain.’  With loud rock shows needing ‘more’ gain isn’t really an issue, but what I do find very often  is that when I use “line in” on the M10 in conjunction with the DPA battery box, the levels are really low and I have to crank the m10 up really high (almost to 10) to even get levels peaking at -20db (this is at average/medium volume shows, not loud ones) so I try using the ”mic in” jack and now the levels seem too hot and I have to turn the gain knob on the M10 way down to like 1.5 to keep levels peaking around -12db where I like them. But with the “mic in” and gain knob that low, it still seems dangerous because if the music does suddenly get loud my levels really spike.
So I’m hoping that the CA9100 preamp can correctly power the 4061’s because the adjustable gain knob on it would allow me to use “Line In” and add a bit more gain to the signal so I can be at around -12db instead of peaking at -20db

They work just fine with 9V, that's what most everybody runs them with who doesn't have a DPA power supply. Your Church preamp or your 8V Tinybox will work great.
