« on: October 02, 2006, 09:37:43 PM »
can you please give me your opinion on which all in one box would be the best replacement for a v3?
not that i have a v3 but i like the v3 sound, so can i have opinions on which one (or which one not to get), if i was looking for the v3 sound

What is it about the V3 that you want to replicate, the output of the mic preamp or the ADC?

If you like some samples of 481 > V3
                                      481 > V3 > modSBM   let me know.  I love the V3 sound with my 480's.

ummm good question
not 100% sure, prob the mic pre
another taper i know has 481 > V3 > DA-P1/MT (i say prob the mic pre because he had a v2 before that and i liked the results he got)
and i love the results he gets, i have also listened to other V3 sources and liked the results

shaggy the UA5 is not an all in one, but you are right - its a nice cheap V3 sound

You looking to do 16-bit or 24-bit?

I ask because I loved the V3 ANSR 16-bit with Neumanns that I use and mod 460s that my buddy uses.  But since I got the SD722, I've found that I like the SD722 ADC better than the V3 ADC at 24-bit.  Still prefer the V3 mic pre.

Perfect response. LOVE the Grace Pre sound, but the ADC in the 722 is top notch. I wish I owned a Grace pre. Thank goodness I got a V2 and a V3 loaner both on the way.  ;D
I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can

IMO, if you're -really- set on the V3 sound, there is no all-in-one alternative.  V3 + an inexpensive MT2496 and CF card as a recorder, and you're pretty darn compact.  If you're on a budget, I think the Warm-PLUS mod UA5 sounds mighty fine and similar to the V3, as does the Transparent-PLUS UA5.

Perhaps the ACM 671 compares, I haven't heard enough to know.

I use the v3 > mt2496  :nightfevah:
Seriously, the band makes the music. Tapers just point mics in the right direction and hit "record".

That's good to hear!  The last patcher I had complained about my AKGs, fluffed schoeps for about 15 minutes, stayed patched in, and farted on me all night long.

Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

i agree with brian
if you want the v-3 sound, then you want a v-3.
v-3 > mt 24/96 works great for me.
happy taping

Depending on whether you want 16 or 24 bit, any of the Oade ACM mod units will be great... 660 (16bit), 671 (24bit) and now the HDP2 (24bit) all feature ACM mods which produce a V3 like sound IMO. There are enough samples to judge now, at least for the 671 and 660. Try my 9/27/06 Buffalo Umphrey's recording that's up on bt.etree now... 483 > ACM 660.

EDIT: Realized now you want 24bit. I remember you were doing research into the 671... didn't end up liking it?

It looks like a good amount of advice in this thread.   One thing that really stands out to me are the alternatives.  All of the Oade modified gear.   It says something that they aspire or try to emulate the Grace sound.

Probably the only thing I think I would ever disagree with Martin about is the sound of the 722.  I firmly believe that the 722 may be the very best bit bucket around but sound-wise I personally feel that it is completely lacking.   Awesome unit, cool design, great at capturing bits I just don't like the sound.

When I immersed myself back into tapnig after a nice little sabbatical the first thing I went for was mics.  What mics did I like the sound of.  Then my next decision was what pre/ad was going to make my mics shine.  Hands down for me was the V3.    To me it bring out the best qualities of what I like of the 480's.  Lately I have been experimenting with a modSBM as the AD to see if I can boost the AKG sound out a little more.  So far I haven't run it enough to make a decision but I do know that as long as I have the 480's I will always have my V3.
