we're just saying that it seems silly to use ~$2400 mics and then run them into a $80 MD recorder.

agreed.

remember that md has a lossy compression, and if you're dropping or have already dropped 2 grand on mics saving a couple hundred more dollars might be a better bet than using the md.  believe me, you can tell the difference between an MD recording and any other recording.

not to be a jackass, md's are great for starters, but if you're running those mics into an MD you're probably not gonna end up with greatest sounding recordings no matter what you do.

i guess if you like the sound of md, go for it, don't listen to us, but i think you'd be better off with a DAT or a nomad

just my opinion, and my opinion doesn't matter

Schwilly, I used my MS907 > Old-Ass Sony MZ-R50 for a couple of years...  When I got the NJB3, I realized how bad it sounded on its own and quickly ordered an AD-20.  One time the battery took a shit in the NJB3 so I ran MS907 > AD-20 > MD.  You're dead on about how much better it sounds than MS907 > MD.

I still have my 907.  :)

(+T for good use of a shitty mic, yeah?)

yah ... if your going to use nice mics it would be very advisable to get a out board pre/a>d and Nomad or DAT (I personaly like the nomad)... the only selfpowered AKG mics i can think of are the c1000's ... if your running those it would be less painful to run them straight into a MD, but to get your $$ worth a outboard pre would be nice.
ADK A-51s LE's > Oade W-mod UA-5 > Zoom H4n Pro if I bother to drag out a full rig. More often just the H4N Pro. My LMA tapes

hell yeah chuck, the AD-20 really cleans up these consumer mics, gives detail at the bass heavy rock shows I tape.

GET A NOMAD.  Don't waste your time with MD, it sucks transferring anything to CD.

This coming from a 5-year MD veteran.  I bought my nomad JB3 in February and haven't used my MZR-700 at all since then.

No, the 700 is an APC.  My R50 is a tank.  ;D

The deck is the least important part of your rig although a Nomad doesn't cost much more than a good MD deck.  I say worry about the mics first then get whatever you can afford to record on.  If you have good mics there is always a deck around to borrow.
When cleaning out her attic, Grace found several bootleg recordings her mother had made while traveling around the world with the Grateful Dead. Grace is not permitted to sell these bootleg recordings on eBay.

Wow.  I'm gonna have to, uh, disagree with you there.  If seen lots of opportunities to patch, but I haven't seen a lot of people at shows with spare decks to lend...  :)

Then again, maybe everyone had them and I was just such an asshole they never told me.   :hmmm:
