all-in-one player for .mov, .ram, .mpeg, .avi?
« on: August 03, 2006, 08:15:49 AM »
Hi all,

Do you know of any software capable of playing all these video formats?
I'm sick of having to instlall QuickTime, WMP, RealMediaPlayer etc, I'm sure there must be many other options, but which players do you guys prefer?

I'm mainly concerned about playback, I don't intend to record anything with this software. I'm just looking for all-in-one playback options, the more formats covered, the better.

Thanks,

Jan

Still requires the codecs to be installed, though.  I prefer it over VLC myself anyway.

For QT: use Quicktime Alternative
For Real: Use Real Alternative
For everything else: DirectShow

Huh, I installed Quicktime and Real Alternative some time back and...it's simply Media Player Classic (I assume with the proper codecs installed).  I've not yet found a video that I can't play in Media Player Classic.  Never tried DirectShow, may have to give it a go.

FWIW, When you install Quicktime Alternative it will install MPC along with it if you so choose.  MPC itself does not ship with any native codecs in the way VLC does.

Hi again,

I found a nice overview on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_media_players#Video_format_support

It's true that MPC and VLC stand out, but what about DirectShow? I gather that it's not a player as such, more like a filter?!
