Are there any alternatives to phantom powering the 853Rx's that will allow me to, uh, not attenuate?  I really don't like the idea of boost-cut-boost if it's possible to avoid it.  Note i will not compromise my choice of preamp.  Unless I can modify an AD-20 to give phantom power, which I don't believe you can.  Can anyone recommend anything?  Is it possible to phantom power without the need of attenuators?

Thanks,
Steve

The PS-2 phantom power won't raise your signal from mic to line level - it'll remain mic level - so you shouldn't need the attenuators between the PS-2 and the AD-20.  Simpy run:  AT853Rx > PS-2 > AD-20.

it's common practice to attenuate the mic-level signal because the AD-tinny likes to brickwall, but yes, DIM might be a little confused on the function of the PS-2.

the Mic-2496 is very similar to the AD-20, except it provides phantom power and can output up to 24/192

a few people hear use the mp-2 and the mv-100 with their AT853s, leaving the adc upto their recording devices

I was just explaining why people do it and recommend doing it.

it's still important to note that the PS-2 does not boost the signal, like you said.

Whaaa!! 24/192, smaller than AD-20, Toslink-out, phantom power.... surely there's a catch, whith my crappy luck.  What are the downsides (besides price) to getting a mic-2496 instead of an AD20?

$500
you have to open it up to switch bit rate, power types, etc.
the phantom power is provided by one tiny ass mini-xlr 5pin.  Yer gonna have to get someone brave and skilled enough to make a dual 3pin > mini-xlr 5pin adapter for you.  Maybe Core Sound does this???

People here use them and it appears they have success

Other way to go would be mp2 and not have to worry about attenuators, mini 5 pins... and it has lots of blinking lights (selectable of course!)
