That's correct.  One of the biggest negatives about the Oade preamps is how limiting they are in terms of both being unable to run them when they're connected to AC and how the design doesn't allow for powering from external batteries.  I currently own both the M148 and M248 and, other than the limitations mentioned, they're great sounding preamps.

I'll swear by my M248 to the grave. Run them into the Gefell M210s. Best combo out there for most live recording situations. You can hear my masters on archive.org or etree. Just put :"Jon Pasternak" into the search.

LOL.  Let me understand this right.  Do you like your M248?   ;D

Hey, what kinda run time do you get with your Gefell's through the 248?  I get between 4 and 4 1/2 hours and when I'm fully charged my battery voltage shows about 48.5V, so I was curious of that's what others are seeing or if it's time to start thinking about a replacement battery.

I get 10-12 hours with the M248 after a full charge. if you are only getting 4 hours, it is time to send it back to Doug for a new internal battery!

Good.  Thanks.  That's the answer that I was hoping for.

This is something that I've never understood about the Oade gear.  Their preamps sound fantastic but having the proprietary batteries and strange charging requirements makes the Oade boxes pretty much unusable in most location recording rigs except for concert taping, obviously.  Maybe (clearly?) this was their intention, but when I buy a preamp or any other piece of gear, I'd want to be able to use it for all of my audio needs and not just concert taping.  Just my opinion.  They're simply great sounding boxes, though.

I don't remember my old m248 going for that long with a new battery.4-5 tops. My old m148 would last 10-12 hours...but not the m248. I swear I've never heard of a m248 lasting longer than 4-5 hours.
