I've never put tubes behind them, though. Based on their sensitivity rating, I see absolutely no problem in doing so. I don't know anyone local with a tube amp so I can give you a better opinion. Schuster has all solid-state (Mcintosh), doesn't he? I know Damon uses solid state as well.

For a used price in the $600s on Audiogon, I find it hard to think you could go wrong with these. They're the best monitor/bookshelf I've heard, but also give the Paradigm Studio 40 a listen - different ears and all.
Out of the game … for now?

I don't, though I'd like to. Apartment living and moving 6 times in 6 years (soon to be a 7th) has hindered me.

I was just wondering if people had found certain subs to be a good match or not....

Vandersteen offers a sub.  I read a few reviews that say it integrates very well with the VR1s and also with the big box speakers.

Been thinking about going this route as well.  I have an Onix Rocket ufw-10 that I would bet matches well.  I'm looking for something a little more laid back sounding than my current PSB's.  They tend towards the bright side.

Anyone else care to share an opionion on the VR1's?

I'm interested in hearing what eric thinks of the new (at least since he was here last) amp and dac combo once he gets here next week....

I'm okay with my current setup but want to go to something smaller for apartment living

If you are thinking of the 2qW, it has three drivers.  I have one and it is an amazing sub.  Integrates very well.  I usually recommend it when people ask about subs, but If I were starting from scratch, I'd probably get the VSA sub just to have everything in the same family.

3 drivers...thats right.
I knew it had more than one.  I like that design plan.  Just makes sense.

Yup.  Instead of one big driver with lots of mass that is difficult to control, three tightly controlled low mass drivers with the same effective surface area.  It really is an amazingly tight sounding design.  The integration method is sweet too.  Relieving the main speakers of the low end reproduction really cleans up the mid and upper bass from the main cabinets.

Everything's hooked up right now and I am commencing in the break in period - 300 hours according to VSA.  I've got "You Could Be Mine" on repeat - let's see how many times I can hear it.  I'll post some pics once I clean up the room and add a new audio stand.  These things won't be fully broken in for a few months...

How do any of you that own these speakers feel about the reference characteristics?  do you own the VSA stands too (46in)?  other stands?  what height are you running them at?  12lbs is pretty nice for a monitor that size.

Does anyone have the vm2 or vm3 early monitors?  I think I would like to hear those......

I have VR3s that I dont feel I have the room to properly reproduce them in in my new place.  I will have a small listening room 14x10 and the extreme bass the vr3s conduct is too significant for my next living situation.  They will have to be stored for a short bit.

Peas,

dd
