DAT static help
« on: June 11, 2004, 05:42:10 PM »
Ok, here's my situation...

I taped Mraz last night in Vancouver.  Josephson c42mp > p-mod UA-5 > D8@48k.

I started up the transfer today (DA20-MKII > Extigy > SF 7.0) and every few seconds I got light to moderate digi-noise.  I pulled out the tape, ran the cleaning tape, tried it again, got the same thing.  The digi-noise isn't really consistent (doesn't sound like the same glitches on repeat attempts).

So I gave up on that and tried a different transfer method (D8 > line-out > Extigy > SF 7.0) and it comes through with no problems.

Ideas?  Ways to test?  Help?!

 ??? ??? ???

Thanks,
Ryan

maybe heads on the DA20??

They had better be made out of pure platinum and come with a complimentary "date" for that much money.

The tape in question is a dreaded 90m Sony DDS.

Neither deck has had a problem with a 90 before (but I know I should be sticking with 60s).

I'd say the same, considering the transfer was clean using the D8.

I would say the alignment of one of the decks (probably the Sony) is off.  When this happens only the deck the tape was recorded on will play it correctly.

I think this is the correct answer. I had the same situation with my portable and studio DATs. Get the master transfered before you fix the portable :)

Well, after two more shows last weekend, it looks like it is the D8.  Switched to Maxell tapes and there isn't as much static as the Sony tape, but it is still there if I play it back through the Tascam, but all tapes sound perfect through the D8.

Anyone have any idea on repair costs for a D8 alignment?

Cheers.
