I think I have a springsteen silver of his....turns out it was a FM broadcast in Europe, and he just copied the radio station silvers.  I am guessing that is what he does quite a bit.

the up-front sound, which I guess could be accomplished by getting close to the speakers (getting close to the speakers in a 50000 seat stadium and not being on the floor kinda puzzles me, but oh well..) or maybe with hypers, not sure...?

also the clarity and resolution sounds better than something you'd get from $300 mics, so...

a few thousand, easy... though it may be different for "stealth" taping but I doubt it.  I just sold off all of my gear and all told I probably had $5k in my rig.
