Decca Tree Specs?
« on: January 04, 2007, 10:26:11 PM »
Is this basically it?  I'm thinking of attempting to throw one together.  The green being the mics.  Forgive my crude drawing.

From what I found on the net it seems to be left and right separated by 2 meters and the 3rd in the middle 1.5 meters in front.

The configuration is correct, but your specs are a bit off. I found your source of reference in Wiki, and I'm wondering where they got that. The original "spec" called for 70-100 cm all the way around, or 1 metre for each leg. Use 1 metre for each leg and you should be OK. Also remember that to do a true decca tree, you should be using three matched omni mics.

Well 2 are matched.  And I have a 3rd Gefell w/ omni cap.  I just figured it might be fun to play around with.  So the 2 meters separated is right (1 meter each arm) with the front one just needing to come back a bit?

sometimes you go to war with what you have, not with what you need
(quasi-paraphrasing like crazy here)

deccatree is a bendable technique, allowing for a card to be mixed in as well, rahter than all three being omnis.
I don't do mixes, so I don't recall, but i think the point mic can be a card? (begs for correction)

Moke:
The original idea was three omnis. But engineers have found that a mixture of mics can get them the sound they want. The spacing issue has also been played with I did some additional reading on this last night and found where the 1.5 metres comes from, and as you say, it's all flexible. So, roll your own as long as you get the sound you want.
