Emergency diy windscreens? Sock or napkin?
« on: May 30, 2010, 04:51:42 AM »
What would make the best emergency windscreens for at853's: t-shirt, medium thick cotton sock, washcloth, or a layer or two of paper napkin?
Obviously, I'm not dealing with an ideal situation and just trying to wing something...

What do you think?

How about buying a cheap set of headphones (not ear buds) from the dollar store using the windscreen like material from the ear piece? I don't know how effective this would be, just an idea.

Not really effective as they are VERY thin.

Try tampon wrappers.  Especially if the mics are head mounted.

Tampon wrappers?!? That's the kind of crazy idea I was looking for. Unfortunately, I was already rolling, so didn't get to give that a whirl (or any of the other suggestions--it really was an emergency). I went with the washcloth--it did the trick on the wind, but did muffle the sound a little. Live and learn :)

"dead teddies" - go to dollar store, buy cheap teddy bear with dead rat-like hair, cut off the head(or wherever the "hair" is) and attach to mics appropriately.

Dollar bills.   I've used them a couple of times in a pinch.  They are mostly made of cloth after all.

how do you do that?

Centered the capsule on George's head and pulled the bill down.  Used a thin piece of gaffers tape to cinch it down and used a rubber band another time.   Used that method on my 4021's and 480's.    Both times I forgot my windscreens at outdoor shows and the dollar bill worked in a pinch and worked well.  Not very sightly but hey what can ya do.

I can't imagine that a dollar bill would not hurt the sound a bunch.

I definitely noticed a little hit on the high end with the washcloth, but it worked on the wind, so I think it was worth it. I had no time to go to a store for teddy bears, headphones, etc. I might have been able to find a tampon, but I was trying to McGuyver it with what I had in front of me.

Now that I'm back from the show, I need to find some good screens for these, as well as for my at4051's. Windtech?
