mk41s...
« on: May 26, 2013, 11:10:56 AM »
Hi!

This question is mainly addressed to those with experience of both schoeps mk4 and mk41s.

1. Is it worth getting a pair of mk41s if you already have mk4s?  If someone could please elaborate a bit I´d appreciate!

2. Since the mk41s don´t seem to show up in the yard sale that often anymore, where can you get them for the best price?

Thanks
N.

If you don't mind fighting the FOB mob, cards are fine.  You can often make the same or better tape from the back of the room with hypers, and the 41's also tend to screen out chatty folks during the more quiet acoustic passages.  They work real nice up front too.

Generally I agree with this. IMHO the MK41 is the most distinctively superior Schoeps cap vis a vis offerings from other manufacturers (for instance, lots of them make really nice cardiods and omnis). The MK41 has a nice, flat, full-range response that I think makes it different than most hypers/supers. There are other hypers out there that are situationally good but not good for virtually any application. If you A/B the 41s vs. the MK4s or MK5s, you'd be amazed how little difference there is the tonal balance and response of the recording -- even though the 41s are more directional.

Personal opinion is that if you record in spaces where you need the directionality of a hypercardiod, then the mk41 can be a worthwhile addition.  But of you have a fair bit of control of your location at the venue, you don't need 41.  Generally, i think the mk4 is a better, warmer sounding capsule.

I have both and use both.

This is going to sound crazy, but I can not tell the difference sonically.  I expected that I would less off axis crowd noise and a thinner sound with the mk41s but they two mikes were identical to my ears.  I wear them in a hat.

I do think the mk41 is the best hyper (only the gefell m21 comes close)

The mk41 is good, as is the mk4 and mk5 - I am not a fan of the mk4v or mk41v though

The choice of cap depends on the situation and the rest of the lineage you are running IMO

I'll agree with this ^^ After using both the 4's and 41's for years, i sold my 41's. I just stopped recording in bad sounding rooms from bad locations. I only record in a handful of venues where the 4's sound
great, no need for the 41's. This is me, others may disagree.

mk21/mk22/mk4/mk2    mk41 isnt much needed imho unless of course you do a bunch of section taping
