Got my new PowerEx batteries today. In the instructions is says they need to be cycled 3-5 times for best performance. Then it says battery cycling ca ne achieved by simply using the batteries and recharging or using the charger's built in conditioner.
Do I only have to use the conditioner once, or would I also do it 3-5 times? Just kinda confusing wording.

That's what I'm doing right now. Kinda weird though. Hot both buttons at the same time. Both went yellow. Before I left for the store, one had already switched to red(charging). The other one, one hour later, is still discharging(yellow).

Here's how I do mine:
[1] Charge full, till green lights are lit
[2] Swap batts from one side/charger to the next - this will almost always result in red lights for the batts, even if previously charged to green (can't switch to discharge mode when fully charged / green light lit, for some reason).
[3] After you swamp them out, hit the discharge/charge buttons to discharge them. As Mike says, they'll flash yellow while discharging, then go to red while charging, then green when fully charged.
[4] Repeat [1]-[3] a couple/few times upon purchase, or every couple months.
[5] Off you go!

what is the best way to discharge the 9.6V RC batts? or is it not necessary? they are Ni-MH btw.

Push Buttons? Brina, what kind of charger are you using? I use a Xenotronix HPX10-06C100 Smart Charger. Looks and acts just like the Powersonic flavor. Whenever I plug it in for a charge, it automatically discharges it first, then fully recharges.
That description was specifically for the Maha C204F charger and may apply to the latest and greatest 4-cell AA charger offered by Maha as well.
Two of the many reasons I picked this charger: [1] it has the discharge option, and [2] it's an option, so if I just want to top them off I can do so easily.
