DIY Dead rats
« on: April 27, 2010, 07:50:35 PM »
My wife is making dead rats for my ADK SC-T mics.  I have a few questions.  Should there be air space between the mic and rats?  Is it okay to put the rats over wind screens?  Thanks for any advice that can be proviced.

I didn't DIY mine...I got them from Windcutter.com and they designed them to fit right over my foam windscreens.

yeah i snagged some samples from another source online but they sent me 2"x3" which wont cut it for my 214's (i will however keep it around to throw over some church mic's that I may purchase when I have some free cash). I need to find it at a local fabric store.. the stuff I got samples for was 'on sale' for 100 bucks a yard.. its damn nice stuff but im broke hahaha (http://www.prefurs.com/Ask-Leena.asp)

I always put them right over the foam windscreen.  As an engineer I've puzzled and puzzled until my puzzler was sore, and so far I can't see a valid reason why an airgap would be beneficial.  There is an airgap between the capsule and the mic housing so the capsule an move... but putting other gaps between the layers doesn't seem like it would slow down the wind.  I mean theoretically each boundary layer might have some benefit, but you have a hundred boundaries in the foam windscreens and a hundred more in the dead rat fur, so adding one more won't buy you much in comparison the the hassle of devising this dead air space.

Well I was thinking about a solution for my Sony C38B's. Any specs on the type of fur?  Elastic base sounds good. Would the foam screen be required? Since last time I checked Sony did not offer any windscreens. Well I will need to do something. Any help would be appreciated.

tgakidis I like the way your AKG Dead Rat screens look on the C414's !  I have a stereo match pair kit of the AKG C414B-XLS mics myself and want to make a pair of Dead Rat screens similar to yours. I have no really good sewing skills really but have sewn up my own pants mends before!  :)  Do you have any recommendations of what size and shape material I need to get to start this DIY project?  The fabric and the elastic band.  Any Do's and Don't's recommendations that you might have learned from this?   Thank You!

Was THIS the fabric you bought?  Interested in making some rats for my mics as well, but want to start out with the proper fabric.  Thanks for the ideas so far in this thread!

Look similar, but hard to tell from the online pic.  I think the fur I got is a bit longer, but I couldn't say for sure.  If you can find a store it would be easier to find what you want.  Sorry I am not much help.

No worries, any information in this thread is bound to be helpful.  Am I to take it that the longer the fur (within reason), the better it will be at wind-handling capabilities?  Thanks.
