Topic: n00b questions about SP mics and phantom power

Ok, I read through all the threads dealing with begginers rigs. Still, I'm not sure whether I understand correctly.

I plan to purchase a JB3, which seems to be a good solution. Later on, when I get some money  I'll buy the rest. What I'm gonna do is stealthing at very small venues, both acoustic and loud rock, both indoor and outdoor.

My question is what exactly I need.

I think these are the possibilities, right?

mic > mic-in JB3 .. poor results

mic > batt box > line-in JB3 .. this is better

mic > ? > phantom power box (e.g. DEN PS-2) > ? > line-in JB3 .. best (provided I don't want to use external A/D)

a) From what I read here, there's some issues with phantom power connectors so I'll have to use some transformer, adaptor or something. XLR, mini, jack... I didn't understood at all and I'd appreciate step by step scheme for wiring phantom power (for example DEN PS-2).

b) Last but not least, how about the mics compatibility with phantom/batt box?? Are there some mics compatible with both (9V/48V)? Let's stick with the SP-ATs to keep things simple.

Edit: SP mics can be used with plug-in power or 9V batt box OR you can have them moded for use with phantom power (they will be no longer usable with plug-in or batt box)... Am I right?

c) What's the difference between DEN-PS2 and SAM-S-2 phantom power supplies?? (size?)

Hi there.

Split the picture in two. In a top one and a bottom one.

The top one is just like the AT mic + SP batt box solution and will work.
(Except you have drawn two mono connectors instead of a single 1/8" mini).     

The lower one needs power for the adaptors. Say a Denecke PS-2.  Add this.
But even then your levels will still be disappointingly low. So add transformers.
There is a thread on transformers for the same application going on right now.

The "last" alternative is to connect in an AD.20 (pre and ADC) and go optical to the jb3.

If you went with the AD20 you would need the PS2 also btw...

Yep, I understand. AD20 is only analog to digital converter.

I learned quite a lot during wading through the forum reading posts. I was just kind of confused by the adaptors / transformers thing.

Just so you know, if you go with the Hosa Mit-176 transformers you will also need an adapter to go dual 1/4 mono to 1/8 stereo. I did this with adapters from radio shack. If I remember correctly it was two 1/4 to rca plugs into an dual rca to 1/8 stereo adapter. There might be a direct dual 1/4 to 1/8 mini out, try the web.

Connectors aren't a problem. I can DIY any 1/4 to 1/8 or vice versa or whatever adapters
