Title: Right angle trs instead of xlr? Bueno?
Post by: Elguapo511 on November 03, 2019, 10:51:40 AM
For foot print reasons I am gonna buy a pack of right angle trs to female xlr cables.

Any reason not to other than the slightly lower durability with the trs ?

This is going to allow a much smoother set up.

Just double check that your deck supplies phantom power to the TRS.  It probably does, but standalone TRS input jacks will usually not supply phantom power due to the potential for shorting when the plug is inserted.  Because of this, make sure you never plug or unplug the TRS cables while the phantom power is on.

Nice tip.

I have an ederol r-44 and maybe a zoom h6n.   So I think I’m ok.

Why not right angle stubbie xlr's?

I don’t see those as available.  They are a bit more expensive and still a bit bulky.

But I am hoping to be proven wrong...

I have purchased these stubby right-angle XLR cables from Ted and they are worth every penny. I went with having a short (18 inch) cable for the recorder and then I can use an XLR extension of whatever length cable I need. Other people will have different wants/needs.

What Ted is selling is inexpensive compared to most other costs in the recording chain and are beautiful, well-made cables.

I was initially concerned about having to use TRS into ch5-6 of the Tascam DR680 (no XLRs for those channels), but never had a problem other than an occasional loose plug which needed to be pushed back in fully.

In light of a non-locking TRS jack in contrast to a locking XLR, make sure the reach of the right-angle plug or adapter provides sufficient clearance so that the plug seats complete without contacting the surrounding edges of the recorder or case.  The connection relies on the spring tension of the jack contacts to hold the plug in place.

I doubt the TRS jacks into the R-44 actually lock.  I use R-44 but have never run TRS into it, and it appears to uses standard combo input jacks which do not lock TRS plugs but do lock XLRs.

If concerned you can Gaffer-tape them for additional security

This is very good advice. One of my TRS connector was blocked little bit by the surrounding of the recorder case. It was not visible for the first look. Because the connector was not plugged properly, the signal dropped sometimes. It took me long time to discover the cause.

Not sure if this is a zoom issue or a trs/phantom power issue.

But

My condensor does not make a signal when plugged in with a trs, but does when using an xlr.

Using a zoom h6.

Gonna start a specific thread

That is how Zoom F8 operates. TRS = line input with no phantom power option, XLR = mic-level input with switchable phantom.
This was changed on the F8n revision so that either input connection can be line or mic-level, with or without phantom.

Not sure how the H6 operates.
