Whats the best way to power a Marantz PMD-671 ACM
« on: January 17, 2007, 04:06:39 PM »
So many options  :-\ internal rechargeable seem ideal, but are they reliable and how many hours do you get with phantom power? I have also heard problems about the sled and its connectivity. How long will a non-rechargeable AA batteries last? How many hrs can you get out of an Eco-Charge E90 with this deck?

Thanks

3 gerbils in spin wheels.... If you have enough pellets you are good to go for hours.

If you need more power, three wookies on a larger wheel, trying to reach for a kind veggie burrito.  Seriously, the power options are almost endless.  Lithium ion rechargables are the easiest and lightest.  Don't know the draw on the 671, but they make them for essentially every voltage.

PM leehookem here on the site.  He runs the ACM671 and really pulls some of the best tapes I've heard in a while.

I prefer the energizer lion rechargeables. Don't use the ones that are greater than 2500mah. The nipple on the end is too short (unless it's cold outside.) ;D

I prefer the maha 801cfd(?) charger. It has the conditioning cycle and will charge 8 AA's in a max of 2 hours on slow charge or an hour on fast.

i'm more of a fan of external power.  less things to worry about.

any ol' source of power between 9-15v and a power rating of ...around 4000mAh will be all you need for 4 hours or so of reliable recording time.

The BG 10-14-88 says it will do 12V~14V.

You should trade those 2700's for some 2500's. The tit on the end of the 2700 is not long enough to make good contact in the battery sled. I learned this the hard way(as have many others). Do yourself a favor and don't go over 2500 Mah.

fwiw....
i'm building a few superbaddass battery system out of toshiba laptop parts.  the finished product is flat, small (a little larger than the wally batts, but way thinner), outputs about 11v and its 5600mAh.

these are not the jamie lutch models.  different parts that I just happened to pick up a wholesale lot of.  they will be solid.!  I'm pumped to build one for myself.  the flat pack makes for easy packing in the gear bag.  Pictures pending....

fwiw, these will be perfect for the 671s.

I run a Lunatec V3 and the Marantz PMD-671 off of a single EC-90 battery and works fine, but if you have 2 bands or a really long show (3 sets) it comes close to running low on battery. I keep a back-up AA set of batteries to run the Marantz if I get too close. It's the Marantz that sucks the power... a V3 will last 3 shows on a fully charged Eco-Charge 90 battery.

I also run a V3 and 671 off an ec90.. I have run both for 4+ hrs.. I have a set of charged energizers in the internal battery holder - but I prefer to run off the external source..   try not to use the display backlight and I only use headphones in the beginning.. honestly the meters are so good on both units I probably could leave the phones at home...

Here is the loot.
I can make 5 of these.

chargers / cables are all brand new, unopened box items.
batteries are used, but take and hold a charge.  I've run each through several cycles and all good thus far.
Pictures show the dimensions compared to other options in this voltage range.

these suckers are 10.8v (11v fully charged) and 5600mAh.
I can start taking orders if anyone wants one.

for those of you who power the 671 externally: is the polarity reversed, like on the UA-5? i know i saw it posted in one of these 671 threads but couldn't find it.

i plan on running some tests in a bit, but those who know: if i am using a power runner l-ion with the voltage set to 9-12v, will the 671 shut down when the voltage decreases to a certain level?

okay, so just to verify: radio shack adaptaplug, connector M & B to use a lithium ion 9v w/ the 671. i should line up + and TIP on both the M & B side, right?

the 671 will shut down after the 9v starts to lose juice. faster if you run phantom.

okay, so just to verify: radio shack adaptaplug, connector M & B to use a lithium ion 9v w/ the 671. i should line up + and TIP on both the M & B side, right?

the 671 will shut down after the 9v starts to lose juice. faster if you run phantom.

that's what i figured. however, if you have internals and an external power source, will the 671 switch over when the externals die without any problems?

Well I finally had time to do a little testing on the WalMart battery.

AKG 483 > Oade ACM Marantz PMD-671 (24/48), phantom on, display light on.

I filled up 2 4GB CF cards + 12 minutes into the third before the last green light went out.  So roughly 8 hours of run time.

It finally died 18 minutes later, saving the recording.  All of this with a two year old battery, one that's been used a LOT!

I couldn't get my dam'n'd grommet in the whole to tighten that up.
Its secured underneath, just so you know.

I've got a few more of these, for anyone wanting a system.

Nick,

Does your price include the cable w/ DC plug?
Is it possible to get a cord with a right angle DC plug on it? (to minimize the deck's width as much as possible?)
How does it connect to a charger?
How long on a charger does it take to reach a full, reliable charge after use?

Thanks for any info....

 :)

it comes w/ a charger that is kinda quirky, but its not that difficult to deal with. it claims to charge in 2hrs. i havent tested how long it takes, but i will tell you this: i recorded last nite for 2+ hrs, then formatted the card, and let it run til it filled the 4gb card up again. so far, its still on 12+ hrs later. this battery is the shit.

I can put on an adaptaplug end so that the RA barrel can be used (for anything).
but honestly, the little barrels I use fit better and are much smaller than the radioshack cable w/the modular tip.

12 hours strong.
thats pretty sweet.

So, the 671 manual says that the power consumption is about 6w on average. So, does that mean it pulls .5a? (6 w/12 v = .5a)? Is this correct? Does that mean a 7 mah battery should run the thing about 14 hours via the external power input (but using DC)? Any insight most appreciated!

Lastly, if Neumann KM1xx draw about 200 milliamps (is that spec correct?), that means these plugged into the thing should draw about 700 mah total (with light and phantom powering on)?

So.... a 7000 mah battery should run the above setup for about 10 hours?

Thanks for any input!

 :)

so, can you have both the internal sled and the external battery hooked up to the 671 at the same time?  will it drain the internals first and then switch to the external?  do i need to do any other mods to power the 671 off a 9v dvd battery?  i picked up the adaptaplugs and hooked up my dvd batt and it seemed to work fine...

I used the walmart battery to power the 671 on my trial run. it is easy with adaptaplug M and B. line up the + to the tip and you are set. i took two batteries and ran both for an hour and 1/2 with no problems (phantom off,24/48, coax in, backlight on occasionally). i'm sure i can get a lot more time, but i didn't want to push it. once the battery drops below a certain voltage, it will die.

i think i read somewhere on these boards that the internals will run first and when they die the externals kick in. but don;t quote me on that b/c i haven't tried.

i run with my internal sled filled and also with an external battery hooked up, at the same time.  it will run off the external battery until it dies and then it will switch to the internals SEAMLESSLY.  try it out and plug your 671 into the wall with internals loaded and hit record.  plug in/unplug the wall wart and watch the screen witch from external/internal, then check your recording on playback.  there will be no artifacts.  as far as the 671 is concerned running on an external battery is the same as having it plugged into the wall.  it doesn't care where it gets it's power as long as it gets it without interruption.

one thing i've noticed is that if the batteries are left in the unit, even with the unit off, they still get drained, slowly.  so taking them out when not in use is good practice.

i guess i had it backwards. i want to try this out as soon as i get some internals. better safe than sorry!

how long can the 671 run on 8 powerex 250mAh AA's?

i ran it on ext power for the first set, then internals for the second, and left them in there without charging...will i have enough juice on the internals for tonight?

(just out of curiosity, of course i'll have the external as backup)

So far I have not been able to kill the "BG 10-14-88 Super Long Life Portable DVD Player Battery" after a solid 6 hours of recording (phantom power) and 4 hours of playback, the meter still reads full. I dont even mess around with the rechargable AA's... This battery is pricey, but solid and it fits in the front pocket of my porta brace bag.

124 dollars

like I said, its pricey - but solid, small and weighs only 1.5 pounds. Nice meter and came with about 20 adapters, which one fits perfectly in the 671

i've been running a test tonight with a 671 (no mods) and a V3. here goes for anyone interested:

taping the radio
source: 483 > dogstar XLR's > V3 (phantom on/48/ANSR OFF) > kindkables coax > 671 (phantom off/24/48) > kingston 8 gig card

i'm using two walmart lithium ion batteries (one to power the V3 and one to power the 671). i just hit the 5 hour mark  8)

i started at 6:05 and i have one green and one red bar left on the battery powering the V3. the low battery light has not even blinked yet. the battery powering the 671 still has two green and one red bar left. i'm very happy  ;D

i hope this helps inquiring minds.

edit to say: i left the back light on the 671 just for the hell of it.

edit to say again: everthing made it 6 hours and 5 minutes before the V3 died.

have you noticed anything quirky about the charger? i have to keep trying different outlets in my house til the orange charging light stays lit. often, it will stay lit for 30 seconds and then start blinking (not charging).
i have read that manual that came w/ it but, the codes for all the lights says nothing about the orange light blinking. other than that, its been rock solid.

it says its rated at 10.8v, but it outputs 12v when fully charged.
its 5800mAh, LiON.

i'm not sure if I have any chargers left...but I bet we can find some on fleabay..where they originaly came from.  I have about 5 of the packs left.
If any of you guys who already bought one of these kits from me would like an additional "extra" battery...lemme know.  they will be useless to me otherwise.  i'll let em go for $25 per.  I would think two or three of these would last a 3 day festival w/o any problem at all.

Dre...i'm glad that worked out.
now go call an electrician before your house burns down.

for those of you who power the 671 externally: is the polarity reversed, like on the UA-5? i know i saw it posted in one of these 671 threads but couldn't find it.
polarity IS NOT reversed on the 671 ala ua5.

Anyone know the polarity and the plug size letters on these off the top of their head?
