Title: AKG mic repair
Post by: TaperBryan on May 08, 2020, 09:48:13 AM
I'm wanting to send my c480 bodies to be checked, etc. to see what was causing the fuzz in some of my most recent recordings. I posted a thread about it on here a couple of months ago. Since it doesn't appear that I (or any of us) will be out taping for the foreseeable future, I thought it would be a good time to send my off for a check up. I am aware of Richard in TN at Land Audio, but am wanting to see what other options I may have before choosing someone to send them off to and take a look at them.

Thanks,
Bryan

For what you would pay Richard Land I would just use that money and get a set of actives from Nick.

what up Bryan (and John!)

is the fuzz in just one mic?  Happening all the time or signal-dependent?

Patrick - Long time, not see/talk. I hope you're doing well! Yeah. The fuzz was only on one mic and the last several times I recorded it was present on each time on the recording. I tested all my caps a couple months ago and recorded numerous 1min segments using different mic cables, interconnects and preamp configs. I wasn't able to replicate in my testing process, but it was present the very next show I recorded afterwards.

Was the distortion always in one particular channel of the recorder? When you were testing at home, did you try all the recorder inputs/channels?

I liked my interaction with The official AKG service guys way more than using Richard Land. Look them up.

weird, sounds like it could be due to SPL that would occur at a show vs. testing at home.  Pretty frustrating either way.  If you can narrow it down to one mic, that may save you some time sending just one capsule to be checked out vs. sending both in

Quick question.  Are there still "official AKG service guys"?  If so would you link them to me?

Thanks!

It was in one channel. When I started my testing process, I put a little sticker on one of the mic bodies so that I could keep track of all the changing of inputs, cables, etc.

Make sure the screw at the bottom of the body near the xlr is tight
I have seen people have issue and that was all it was

I've tightened that little screw a time or to...but, will snug it up again, soon.

Get a set of Nbobs actives!

Thought about it. But, with a newborn due in November/December and no shows being on the radar for who knows when, I'm contemplating unloading my gear and working on my dad skills and my golf game. LOL

Did you decide to go that route. and if so did it resolve your issue? If so and Nick still has the actives I'd appreciate that info as I may go that route too. I have been having the same and found this topic. Doesn't happen every show. Like you I have swapped cables and now even decks (finally traded in my Busman mod R4 that I have been running since 2008 for a Zoom F6).  The R4 was on it's last legs anyway without getting serviced as the 2nd channel XLR connector wouldn't stay clicked in anymore. I only had the T mod on channels 1/2 and V mod on 3/4 which I mostly used only when I had board feeds. Talked to Doug Oade to see what he recommended and he had great things to say about the Zoom F6/F8. Checked out a moe. recording on the archive with 480s to an F6 that sounded crispy as well. Only regret so far is that they only have an app for IPhone.
