I think the 40gb drive is a little thicker than the 20gb drive, and it won't fit.  Not positive about that, but you probably want to verify that before you spend any money.

Source of this speculation:  An ongoing post from someone looking for an H140 so he could do a mod, and that person didn't want the H120 because it didn't have as much space.  I think that eventually turned into the successful CF card mod.

smoking joe is right.  I think the MK3007GAL is the way to go...  I think the 30GB is the largerst single platter that fits in the H120...

If I were you I would by a 32GB compact flash and adpter....

Let http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/HardDriveReplacement be your source of info on which harddisk fits where

Petur is right, but the page is not very verbose.
As the subject says, there is a 40GB low profile that fits the H120 (GAL=Low, GAH=High). But it's impossible to find:
http://www.misticriver.net/forums/iriver-h1xx-series/57093-mk4007gal-drive-ihp-120-a.html

Much better to go the CF route, if you intend to use your iRiver for taping.
On the Rockbox URL above there's also a link for ZIF adapters that you can fit to an iRiver, but I believe those are only good for the H-x40 models with more physical space for the adapter.

CF is the way to go. My iRiver now runs silently and holds a much better charge.

But its 20 gigs not 16 or 4. There are 32 but how much? I'm sure a lot more than a 30gig HD

indeed, for higher capacities a HDD is still the best solution (price-wise)

fyi, I recently spotted a few 80GB disks that are quite affordable (search for MK8007GAH on ebay)

i've had 2 hard drives fail in HP120's.
i certainly wouldn't trust 80gb of files on one.

The obvious reason why folks here are doing it is because it will protect your unique recording from being gone in case of a HD failure.
If you're a taper who care about your recordings, do the mod. You will scrape thru a normal gig + support band with even a 4GB card.

Otherwise, this mod is not for you - stick to HD!  ;D

I can understand the reason why people are doing this but then there are also many people who trust the 7xx SoundDevices with a 40gig HD all summer long. Everyone seems to be so divided on whether they like HD in their recorders or if they are going to CF and non-hard drive based methods of recording.

The reason I got CF working was because it is the only upgrade path with a future. As long as the player works, you can upgrade it with bigger and faster CF cards, compatible harddisks are becoming extinct :/

I could be wrong, but I don't think the 7xx's use that tiny 2"x3" drive like the iRiver does.
Call me crazy...but I just don't trust 'em.
