722 and MP3s?
« on: March 27, 2005, 06:25:22 PM »
I put some MP3s on my 722 HD.  The 722 complains that  the file format is unknown and won't play them.  Microsoft media player handles them.  I know shit about MP3s.  Has anyone tried playing on the 722 MP3s that were not recorded on the 722?

Had to happen... small enough to fit in the pocket of some baggy pants... as the worlds most expensive MP3 player ::)  I think there's good reason it won't recognize the format but that's just a guess based on specuation and grounded on nothing other than it's not a toy.

I don't have the time to explain to you why mike's comment was funny and that comment was asinine.   But I do appreciate the insightful commentary based on speculation and grounded on nothing.  Thats always helpful.

FWIW, there are quite a few lecture series that are released in mp3 format only.  If I could have accessed the material while I as traveling, I could have covered the material last week.  The 722 is advertised to support the format, it should work as advertised.

Perhaps the 722 is intolerant of some encoding options used for this material.  Hopefully someone with a 7xx will have tried this and can share comments based on trial and grounded on empiricism.

The bit rates vary by file set: some are 24kbps, some 40kbps, others 56kbps.   These are low rates but suitable for voice.   The 722 manual says that it supports 32kbps to 320kbps, so at least some of these should work.  When the file is selected in the HDD menu, the information fields show "unrecognized file format".

I did not encode these.

I know I can reencode them using audacity, but I would prefer to not require that step because I may be on the road when new files are loaded to the HD and I won't have access to anything resembling a DAW to do the recoding.  Is there a recommended tool to inspect and decode the mp3 header?  Maybe I can figure this out if I compare header settings in these to an mp3 generated by the 722.

I don't see why they wouldn't work unless it has DRM on it, which I really doubt it does.
My guess is this is a firmware issue, might want to let SD know about it

No harm done.  I'm just pissed that this thing didn't work as I needed under the circumstances.  I listened to some 24/96 mule in place of the lectures but it would have been better to get through those while I had time to concentrate.

I have since downloaded additional mp3 samples from a music store webpage, and it doesn't play those either.   So a new service request has been sent to SD.  It does play back it's own mp3 recordings.

It does play back MP3s, but according to SD it only plays back files encoded at the same rates that it supports in the record mode.

Not so good for me in this case but at least I know what is going on.  In the future, I'l just recode to waves if I need them.
